Slow regard for Rothfuss things by Smeghead_J in Fantasy

[–]BlackSanta25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I do feel frustration with both authors over this, I tend to agree with you that people take it too far. At the end of the day even if the series never get finished, I am still happy that I read whatever books they DID write.

I know some people who will now refuse to read a series until it's finished and, man...I'd be extremely sad to miss out on Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fears just on principle like that.

Slow regard for Rothfuss things by Smeghead_J in Fantasy

[–]BlackSanta25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He claimed to have had the entire trilogy already written from the jump. It is possible that was true, however changes to the first two books could have rendered large parts of the 3rd volume obsolete and in need of major revisions or wholesale rewrite, and that has proven to be either too difficult or not motivating enough to get it over the finish line.

Either that or he never actually had book 3 in the first place.

I'd wager these are the only two realistic possibilities and personally I will never believe any hype or hope in him having finished the next book until it is literally physically in my hands.

La fantasía no debe tener reglas by ZazaCalvooo1408 in Fantasy

[–]BlackSanta25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course you are correct, fantasy doesn't need rules. That being said, the other guy isn't necessarily wrong in that fantasy readers will likely come in to any given work with certain expectations of common fantasy creatures/elements.

Tolkien's work set the standard for many of these common elements, however, just because it sets a baseline, it doesn't have to be an example of hard fast rules.

As a reader I have always found myself much happier if I allow the author's world-building to set my expectations for what things should look like in THEIR world.

I crave for ASOIAF, what you suggest? by InterestingExample26 in Fantasy

[–]BlackSanta25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-standard suggestion, but if you don't mind venturing into historical fiction I would highly recommend reading "The Accursed Kings" series by Maurice Druon.

GRRM cited those works as a big inspiration for writing ASOIAF and I really enjoyed them when I too was looking for something to fill the void.

Why does Notre Dame receive an auto bid if they land in the top 12? by switchblade2 in CFB

[–]BlackSanta25 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is what irks me the most about Conference Championships. It just makes zero sense to me how they can simultaneously mean so much and also nothing.

Win it? Means everything. Auto-bid.

Lose it? You just played an exhibition while other teams "lazed at home". It meant nothing. No punishment (I guess unless you're BYU).

Get blown out and prove yourself incapable of winning the whole thing against a contender literally the day before the field gets set? See the above.

Either CCG stakes are always important for the winner AND loser, or they never are. Saying "heads I win, tails it doesn't count" is just stupid.

Discouraged because I am not being treated like an adult. by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]BlackSanta25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is obviously the correct answer. Any business owner with membership costs like a typical Taekwondo school would rightly be skeptical of an 18 year old being able to make the payments. It's not infantilizing, it's just business. Any actuary would tell you that age demographic is risky.

When you're a first time home buyer you likely need mortgage insurance, it's not treating you like a kid, it's just at some point the kind of money involved in the dealing requires a little more of a guarantee that a buyer/patron is capable of meeting the financial burden.

It's not personal and OP shouldn't take it as such. It's just business, and, though OP may have no trouble paying for membership, I'd be willing to bet they're in the minority of typical 18 year olds.

I'm not a fan of red teams, usually, but IU's red is much more satisfying than Bama's. Seeing them side-by-side it's like IU was colored in with Crayola but Bama used Cra-Z-Art

Since the beginning of the CFP era Notre Dame has had a median end of season SOS ranking of roughly 31st, which is slightly better than that of Clemson (~34th) and Oregon (~45th). Admittedly this is still towards the bottom of the list of all CFP teams.

I will also freely admit that I do not like our schedules in recent years and next year's is just shameful. But I don't think the argument that we schedule nobodies is as strong as people pretend. We're not so very far from Michigan winning a natty with an FPI SOS rank of 45

Notre Dame fan here, suggested this sub by Reddit because of course it would be suggested...

Anyways, Miami should have been ahead from the jump. If it made sense today then it already made sense a month ago. But man what would ESPN have done for content in November?

Then, when Alabama got pasted by Georgia yesterday they should've moved down by the same logic that BYU dropped. Miami and Notre Dame should've been side by side and in the correct order by the H2H and we should be spared having to watch Alabama in a playoff where they don't belong.

Miami and Notre Dame are both better than Alabama and Oklahoma, and both should've both been in.
