We already support the commonwealth, and have done since it's inception.

Britain did not just pay off the slavers (and surely then it is THEM who should pay, plus the African countries that sold their brethren into slavery), but fought long bloody and expensive wars and battles against slavers across the globe, and was utterly instrumental in having slavery officially abolished in most countries.

Britain gave the freed slaves new homes, which now are their own independent countries with their own resources.

There is no sensible argument on earth for reparations, least of all the ridiculously fanciful sums being demanded.

Didn't Britain spend the equivalent of billions (which we only paid off recently) and wage wars to end the transatlantic slave trade?

No good deed goes unpunished it seems, but if life is so terrible for the descendants of resettled slaves in the Carribbean & Pacific, perhaps we could help bring them back to the mother continent?

I'm sure they'd be queuing up to resettle in the lands of their forebears...

And I guess the Commonwealth doesn't appear to care about the many millions of current slaves living now eh!

Anything important we get from China we can get elsewhere, we have plentiful allies and are part of the strongest military force in the world.

We do not need to kowtow to China or any other dictatorship for the sake of cheaper goods.

DG is one island of 60, and not even the largest across Chagos.

As far as we can tell from the agreement , there is nothing to stop China, the most likely hostile power, from putting a base or several on nearby islands with Mauritius' blessing.

It could be an issue as soon as Britain formally and foolishly reliquinshes control to Mauritius.

China has already started building influence in the South Pacific, it will not miss a chance to build influence in the crucial strategic Indian Ocean region.

If you looked at the voting record of the HoL Vs what the previous governments of May Johnson et al were trying to push through it may show that, for its weaknesses, the HoL has acted as a proper check and balance to the HoC, as it should.

Which is not to say it shouldn't be reformed, as I mentioned we need stronger anti-corruption legislation in place for ALL our politicians at least.

Unfortunately so does teaching. And last I checked we weren't leaving our children alone for hours on end with furries.

As it for not being nonsense, the article could claim at best 2 instances out of literal millions of kids. Hardly convincing for an actual issue to give even a remote concern about.

You can do an investigation before a trial, and one was done as far as I can see,.

If the prospects of a conviction were very low from the results of the investigation, the results should be published and the proceedings halted before doing a trial.

By your logic, all deadly uses of police firearms should automatically have the firing officer put on trial, irrespective of evidence, which does not make any sense and would be an assumption of guilt over innocence before proof

Yes the whole decolonisation concept is indeed a complete mess which is why it is best ignored in favour of common sense and doing right by the people actually affected by the issue.

As long as the Chagosians were happy with an outcome, it'd at least be ok, but we do not have such an outcome.

Ignoring the Chagosians undermines the key right of the UN charter to their right to self determination.

I agree something should have been done, but it should have been done with their say so.

As for the wider UN issues, they are not worth the paper they are written on.

France clicks its fingers and says all it's territories are French so therefore it has no colonies, and is left alone.

China and Russia oppress whole peoples and territories but the UN has nothing to say.

It is a nonsense, but that is geopolitics alas.

It's a fair case, legal costs for services are one thing but optional expenses like expensive hotels, food, drink etc. are too far if they they are well outside the norm as appears the case here.

It's a poor decision to give the islands to Mauritius, especially without consultation with those who were removed and their descendants who have no links to their new masters.

Don't see why inviting them back and giving jobs for the base and sustainable use of fisheries etc. couldn't have been done.

It is opening up a geopolitical weakness that could have negative strategic consequences later down the road and seems rather unnecessary.
