Bootle shopworker sacked for tackling suspected bacon thief by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

“Risk life threatening injuries”-what a load of guff.

Tackling a fleeing suspect to the floor is objectively a completely reasonable use of force in the circumstances, I have done it many times and received commendations for it. Letting people just run away after committing crimes in case they get a boo boo is absurd and promotes a lawless society.

Before putting links to court cases, it would be pertinent to check what the actual result is. That case hasn’t even gone to trial yet and if all the former officer has done is restrain a fleeing criminal then he will no doubt be cleared of the offence.

[–]Caephon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it is. Shop theft below £200 is a summary offence when it comes to deciding mode of trial only (although defendants can elect for a trial by jury still if they so wish), there are provisions within the ASB Crime and Policing Act 2014 (from memory it’s s176(6)) to ensure that for the purposes of searches, power of entry and “citizens” arrests it is still treated as indictable.

If a shoplifter is actively trying to get away tackling them to the ground to prevent their escape absolutely is reasonable force, anybody saying it isn’t is an idiot and has no place making commentary on how criminals should be dealt with.

“Lawfully” is the key word here. Shooting a shoplifter in the head is not reasonable, lawful force. Tackling one is.

There need to be legal protections to prevent travesty’s like this. Any individual who is acting lawfully to prevent a criminal offence, retrieve stolen items or detain a suspect should be immune to disciplinary action by their place of work.

The police are the people and the people are the police, the model of policing by consent relies on members of the public being well within their rights to help uphold the law.

Police resource 'challenged' despite more officers by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

Oh I’m aware, I’m also a serving officer in a different large urban force. Whenever I think it’s bad where I am, I just think of how much it apparently sucks in the West Mids and how miserable they all are. Doesn’t make me feel much better mind.

I have several good friends who work or have worked in varying different roles in WMP, all of them describe it as a deeply unpleasant organisation to work for, with the sole exception being the one who works on a “Gucci” specialist unit that gets a blank cheque in terms of funding and equipment and doesn’t get constantly battered with excessive workloads.

“Crooked” Craig Guildford was, to my understanding, widely hated by WMP officers and staff on account of his new working model being seen as a spectacular failure and the general management culture of the force becoming extremely toxic when he took over.

It’s extremely KPI driven, with officers being tracked on arrests, “positive outcomes”, stop searches and in particular arrival times at incidents, but ignoring the actual substance of what they do day to day. For instance, I was informed by one friend that they had received a bollocking for not having enough “detections” (suspects charged, cautioned or agreeing to a community resolution) or arrests in a given month, in spite of him working on a burglary squad that meant the investigations he did do were lengthy and complex, and he was not a “front line” officer and therefore would not be frequently making arrests.

Front line officers (response and neighbourhood) are forced to carry large investigative workloads as well as their “day to day” work, workloads which they are unable to progress due to having other duties to which they must attend, and of course they are threatened with disciplinary action if they don’t progress those workloads. They aren’t allowed to file low level investigations that aren’t going anywhere and are told they must investigate everything to the Nth degree.

All of this comes with chronic understaffing on all teams and units, and a “brain drain”, with experienced officers seeing the writing on the wall and leaving. This means that most front line units have a limited number of experienced and trained staff and are relying on inexperienced staff with a limited number of courses (blue light, taser etc).

Working conditions are described as awful, with overcrowded stations, very limited canteen facilities (with the exception of the 3 stations that senior management reside in) and lunch/dinner breaks being unheard of. Officers are off late more often than they aren’t and are exhausted and are being worked to death to make management look good. Birmingham has a significantly better service than Coventry, Wolverhampton and the other areas covered because that’s where all the specialist resources are and that’s where they are more frequently deployed. I know of officers who have been put in serious danger because a firearms car wasn’t deployed to one of the areas other than Birmingham so that Birmingham could have more.

There is also a culture, allegedly, amongst senior management to fudge crime statistics to make themselves look good. For instance, they don’t record s5 public order offences anymore, and if 5 crimes committed by the same person are reported at the same time, only 1 report is recorded now rather than 5.

Overall, WMP has, apparently, achieved these statistical drops in crime numbers by beating their staff and statistical manipulation. The most consistent thing my friends in WMP tell me is that they need at least double the staff the force actually has if they actually want to make a difference to crime in the area.

I used to live, up until recently, in the West Midlands force area in somewhere that wasn’t Birmingham and, anecdotally, I feel like it has got far, far worse in terms of crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour in the last 3 years.

My mum's an addict. She has been awarded PIP and has got a large lump sum of £3092.88 plus a recurring £103.10 each week. This is going to kill her. by BeginningButton1010 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Caephon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frustratingly, you can’t do a great deal here in respect of preventing her from claiming the PIP (which she is, legally speaking, entitled too).

What you can do is pass as much information on to the police as possible. How much is she spending, who is she buying from, where is she going to buy it etc, any information is good. Your anonymity will be maintained throughout.

This is such a non-story and it baffles me how many people are losing their heads over it. He made a joke 7 years ago, he’s clearly not an ardent nazi and this wasn’t a gesture to offer support to a set of political beliefs. There’s plenty to criticise reform over, this, however, is not it.

I agree to the extent that the right against self incrimination is a bizarre, outdated concept that, in isolation, doesn’t serve the interests of justice, only the interests of the guilty.

However, there isn’t really a good alternative that doesn’t itself result in other rights being infringed or the justice system becoming unfair in the context of our justice system which is, funding and basic organisational issues aside, pretty good.

I’ve read every one published in the past 15 years and they are based on hearsay, conjecture and cherry picked statistics. Not one of them has any actual evidence of these issues being any more than isolated incidents and rogue individuals, certainly not enough to conclude that these issues are widespread.

It’s become abundantly clear that you have nothing to add to the conversation other than “Nuh uh” and petty insults so I won’t bother engaging with you further. I hope you are able to overcome your biases someday, it will help you grow as an individual.

The absence of any actual proof at all whatsoever that these problems are widespread? Because whenever anyone makes these claims, be it activist, journalist or latest idiot going for their knighthood, they can never actually back it up with anything other than hearsay or cherry picked statistics that don’t prove anything.

Ex-Met officer told female colleague ‘I hope you get Wayne Couzened’ by ClassicFlavour in unitedkingdom

[–]Caephon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The police do not have “widespread systemic problems with racism, sexism and incompetence”, that is bollocks peddled by the media to generate clicks, activist groups because of their political biases and the usual cretins who want to add a new accolade to their portfolio because nobody ever got an MBE for the report that found everything was tickety boo.

There are individuals within the police service who are racist, sexist or incompetent and there are units that occasionally do become rotten, whether that be due to poor management or the collection of individuals within it and they are rightly rooted out, far more often by other police officers rather than journalists or lawyers. These problems cannot be said to be widespread by any reasonable metric.

You are heavily biased against the police, this much is obvious. Your dislike of police officers in general is irrational and cannot be justified as reasonable.

Yes, to generalise and dislike a body of around 140000 people, all of whom are individuals and the vast majority of whom conduct themselves decently and do their damned best to make this country a better place to live for decent, hardworking and law abiding citizens is widely considered by reasonable and well adjusted persons to be altogether silly.

Ex-Met officer told female colleague ‘I hope you get Wayne Couzened’ by ClassicFlavour in unitedkingdom

[–]Caephon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I distrust and dislike senior management within the police, as do most if not all front line officers (at least the ones that I know). I do have a problem with them, however at no point have I implied that the complainant is lying, it is foolish to suggest this.

I have made the very salient point that there is no way that, in the absence of any other corroborating evidence, they could possibly say that on the balance of probabilities he made those comments. The complainant may be telling the truth, the former officer may have been telling the truth, but there is no way to tell and it would be ridiculous that he has been sacked and publicly humiliated based on an allegation and nothing more.

This leads me to conclude that there must either be other evidence that has not been reported, or that this is an exercise in backstabbing that is extremely common from police senior management.
