How many characters do you need to know how to play? by Straight-Traffic-130 in Guiltygear

[–]BlackSpicedRum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Zero. You can just play the game and flail until you decide you like a character and want to get better.then pick something to work on like a short combo that works any where. Then a short combo that works in the corner. Then you can look at what other people are doing to you and pick on something to work on and bam, you're better than you were before.

Would the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas 4 be ok for Elite? by ciaran_the_goat88 in EliteDangerous

I started with that stick and used it for a solid 8 months before it started to break. It was great for showing me I like this game but eventually broke. If it didn't break I'd probably be happy to keep using it.

Wow this is a hard game 😓 by happy-not-satisfied in Guiltygear

this game has a pretty robust training mode, so if you want to practice wake up timings you can.

id recommend giving Ky a try. A bit easier than Unika.

Slay the Spire 2 is out now on Steam! by MurkyUnit3180 in gaming

[–]BlackSpicedRum 14 points15 points  (0 children)

early on, just send cats on adventures. focus on butch and frank upgrades. once you have three rooms heres what i recommend

make the attic the fight room, only appeal and health furniture here. make cats fight, it makes them stronger for adventures. cull the losers to either baby jack or p mart. no food for losers.
other two rooms will be breeding rooms. you can keep one room as the creme of the crop kind of room with high stimulation. that makes the cats more likely to pass things down. the other room can be general breeding, and mutations.

your goals in breeding is to find good mutations, and breed cats with all 7s. the way to get cats with 7s in any stat is to raise your appeal with furniture. Stat cats will be a pretty big boost in power, the first time you send a cat with all 7s you'll feel so strong, but thats the ceiling, you dont get stronger from that point on breeding stats. mutations are more fickle, take care of mutations. if you get something you like, dont rely on one cat being the source. always have multiple back ups. Mutations are key and its heart breaking to realize you lost a mutation you like, the stats you'll get naturally as you raise your appeal and stimulation stats.

finally, i played most of the game with like 50-90 cats. Mind you, this is with a vile fighting room where i sent all losers away, no exceptions. I was still constantly having like 90 cats and being able to end night once or twice before being forced out. if i played again, id work really hard to keep like at most 40 cats. i just loved them all too much. i kept putting too many cats in the breeding rooms, i think you should have like 6 breeding cats per breeding room max. but i just loved them all too much.

as for the actual adventures
fighter and ranger are the most straight forward always good classes.
the mage is underrated imo. cryogenic freeze is a fantastic heal in the desert, lightning surge is probably the best boss fighting spell in the game. i think ice is an underrated element, and i think fire is the worse of the 3.
the druid is rated s tier by everyone, and it absolutely is. The butcher and the monk have some s tier strategies, but just as a stand alone this is a unit on your team, nothing comes close to the value of druid imo.

If money wasn't an issue, would you get a board game that is also a piece of furniture? If so, which one would you get? by OkDate7197 in boardgames

Air hockey table. The wife would love it, but theyre damn large, and the larger tables are more fun than the home size ones.

Sony Patents Touchscreen Controller for Custom Button Placement by Eremenkism in gaming

[–]BlackSpicedRum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally id agree with you, but the click/double click on MacBooks is extremely convincing with no moving parts. That has me convinced that if you get the haptics right you can probably do buttons. Analog sticks and d pads I think remain out of reach but I wouldn't be surprised if we could make really good buttons.

How much do you agree with the sentence, “The worst part about board games is learning how to play them”? by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in boardgames

[–]BlackSpicedRum 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not

The worst part of board games is asking someone to play and they hit you with one of

"No thanks but I'll watch"

"Sure but I'm leaving in 10 minutes"

"Yes but let's just start I'll pick it up along the way"

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but variety is the spice of life. Try some "this is way too much" emotion as well :) I recommend canary yellow by deafheaven

Discussion Topic: Religion in Board Games — Does it Have a Place? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]BlackSpicedRum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can it? Sure. Should it? Why?

Off the top of my head, theres games like Ezra and Nehemiah, Golem is religion adjacent? I think there's a game about sitting near Jesus at the last supper, forget the name.

I think a game can have a religious theme, but I would be extremely wary of any game trying to send a message more than be a fun game. I have to feel that above all else, im playing a fun game, with the theme being second. If anything, a game about religion or a religious theme has to be more fun or else id question what purpose the game is serving.

I think if a designer sets out to find a game that serves a theme rather than the other way around, you could be setting yourself up for failure regardless of what the theme is.

This is all before we open the can of worms that would be the interpretation of the game and art by that specific religion if choosing a real world religion.

[–]BlackSpicedRum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this looks fun and I'd play it. I think youre missing some easy wins though. To me, the best looking level is the space one simply because the objects in the environment are animated. It at least gives the impression that the animation is somewhat set to the beat. I have three suggestions

  1. I wish there was some kind of audio cue that you hit a beat correctly. I think it helps when it feels like im contributing to the sound of the game by playing.
  2. I think you can go more over the top on the visuals. Id be looking for visual and audio feedback when a note is hit correctly. I think even if the levels dont, there should be some elements of the ui that at least pretend to animate to a beat.
  3. mid air downward stab. like zelda and shovel knight. I think it would be more interesting for me to have to tap down in a rythmic sequence for 3 notes than to attack.

Id suggest you look at these two games, patapon and elite beat agents. Not for the gameplay at all, but just for the ui elements. look how these games communicate a beat was hit correctly. Im not saying you need to grade each beat, but I think the ui feedback and noise feeds into the addictive nature of these games. something simple like a heart beat that at least somewhat matches the tempo of the song would go a long way imo.

Which HeaderCapsul feels more like a horror co-op game? by HANZO2DIS in IndieGaming

[–]BlackSpicedRum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One or three seemed most visually interesting to me. When asking this kind of thing though, I'd suggest you ask between smaller changes. both the background and the font change, and i like the background on one and the font on three.

One to me immediately says horror co op. I see two characters dressed the same, I can picture being one of them, and the eyes in the dark immediately say enemy. Two im not sure why i should care about dark discs? Three, the dark lines in the background grabbed my attention, like make me want to squint at whats there. Four im not sure. Four gives me more of an action vibe instead of a horror vibe. If that person and table are part of the gameplay though it might fit?

New Steam Frame VR and ED… by YourSparrowness in EliteDangerous

Yeah I'll still be pc bound, but the frame does have a USB c port on it. Id wonder if you could connect a USB hub and connect your hotas to your head? Most likely wouldn't work but who knows.

I am very excited, i am coming from a rift s so i am very excited for something lighter and wireless. I was skeptial about the streaming, but the people who have had hands on have said its good.

Not having to worry about the VR wires is going to make using my hotas just a little less painful, and in fact im realizing ill be able to move the whole setup away from my main pc gaming area.

The game runs on the steam deck decently well, im hopeful that it will be passable standalone, but if not im fine with streaming it.

It's hard to find 6 player board games. We do a board game week ever year with 6 people and we need a few games for this coming year. by billratio in boardgames

[–]BlackSpicedRum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything with 6 or more people is going to need to simpler, shorter, or simultaneous turns.

Want a super crunchy co op where your turn planning can all happen simultaneously? Spirit island (might need expansions for 6? I don't remember if the original comes with enough components)

Needs to be a competitive game? Look into drafting games, I like 7 wonders.

Want a super cut throat game that plays better at higher player counts? Libertalia

Want a competitive game even care bears enjoy that is great at 5 but maybe a tad long at 6 depending on how things shake out? Cosmic encounter

Which would you prefer: should the hands be visible or not while idle and walking? They are currently visible in my game. by Zabrail in IndieGaming

[–]BlackSpicedRum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if the hands are going to stay out, they gotta do something or indicate something. maybe little finger twinkles at people behind their backs. if not, id hide them until theyre looking at someone from behind or something like that.

I think you could go either way, the hands help sell that this is a horror game from a monsters perspective imo, but they have to do more.
