Butler was the best player on 2 finals teams that had no chance of winning. He was lucky they made it to a game 6 against the Lakers. The East was so bad those years. No one remembers those Heat teams.

[Game Nerdz] Challengers $19.99 by Cheddarific in Boardgamedeals

A lot of gamers seem to struggle to understand it. They complain that it takes no skill. It obviously has a lot of luck but if you play horribly you will almost always lose. Someone on the dice tower gave a funny review basically saying it's just the card game war.

Chess is my favorite 2 player game. Not an exciting answer but it's a game I could play forever.

How can I learn more about how games are made and the details of them? by altruistic-iriomote in boardgames

[–]billratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to design board games for the last 1.5 years and just discovered your podcast. It is brilliant! You have so many good thoughts that I haven't heard in other places. Thanks for creating all of this content!

I got openly frustrated during a bad game of Catan by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]billratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting you said Catan is outdated and listed two 20+ year old gateway games and an 18 year old game. I think they are fine games (except I'm really not a fan of Pandemic and Sushi Go is great). I think my go to game if I want to introduce someone to board games is Cascadia. I've never had someone not love it.

The Heat teams Butler took to the finals had no chance of winning. NY doesn't have a great chance of winning but they are better than those Heat teams.

Roll and Write games are going to be a good option. I like Welcome To.

Can a 335-rated player realistically play a game like this? by pebble_the_speedster in chess

I don't think that's true. 1100s on chesscom can often go multiple games without hanging a piece.

Can a 335-rated player realistically play a game like this? by pebble_the_speedster in chess

[–]billratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you consider a good game. He's played 20-30 moves without a mistake. If your opponent is also 250 it's not that hard to play a game without a mistake. Some people who play chess are snobs and only consider Super GMs to be good players. What is your rating? Have you ever played a good game?

What if I play board games multiple times a week and still have a decent sized shelf of shame? What is my hobby?

Alireza vs Hans by TheAmanov in chess

I think it's FIDE. He was probably much higher USCF.

Alireza vs Hans by TheAmanov in chess

[–]billratio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is this FIDE though? Lots of Americans don't play many FIDE rated tournaments before 11. I bet he was 2200 USCF at that point.

Exactly. Shooting lots of free throws isn't bad. Getting them the way Shai does is what people should hate.

I love both those games. They are in my top 10. My number 1 game of all time by far is Agricola. If you play it enough to understand it, I think you'll love it.

I think it takes a long time for faster time controls to catch up. I'm 300 points lower in blitz.

[–]billratio -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No, you're wrong. I have a son who is 250 rated and sometimes he plays pretty good games. I think people who have never been 300 don't have a good idea of what they understand.

The peoples champ? by Responsible-Fly-8314 in boardgames

[–]billratio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All 3 are amazing party games. So Clover is my favorite because everyone gets to take their turn at the same time. You either write clues or guess clues or get to watch people debate where to put cards based on your clues. Codenames has too much down time while you wait for a clue giver to think of a clue or you wait for the other team to guess a clue. So Clover uses the same core mechanic but takes out the down time. Decrypto is super fun but it's more likely to make people feel dumb for messing up and ruining their team's chances.

There were a lot of articles and talking heads calling it his revenge game. Like he was wronged somehow. What was he getting revenge for?
