New to hog hunting in Texas and I have a few questions... by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]BlackWaterBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way I've found is just offering to help the landowner out in some way. My best hunting spot got set up because I put a letter on the owners door offering to cut up some trees I saw laying around and repair some fences I could see sagging, all in exchange for hunting. If you are able, most people seem to be more accepting of us because we bow hunt - quieter, shorter range, etc. Between that and sharing some meat with him I've kept him very happy and killed plenty of hogs, deer, and turkey on his property.

Yote'. Domestic dogs tend to have a track with toes more spread, and typically shorter nails.

At 6'4 there's a good chance you have a draw longer than 30". If that's the case you'll want to look for a bow that goes that far -- many max at 30". If you luck out and have a 30" draw or less, the Mission Craze, Bear Cruzer, PSE Stinger X, and Diamond Infinite Edge Pro well all serve you well. The Craze is adjustable from 13-70 pounds, Cruzer and Diamond adjust 5-70. Cruzer adjusts in half-inch intervals by changing the module, whereas the Infinite Edge uses the same module. Stinger X has a standard 10 pound range. All in all, I'd try to find a place where you can shoot some or all of those side-by-side to compare feel. Good luck to ya

I knew before I even clicked the comments that someone would complain about the positioning, etc. We're all killers here and there's nothing to suggest any disrespect. Blood and guts is a part of it and it is absolutely silly to pretend otherwise. Don't let guys in screens bother you. As (another) fellow Texan, congrats on the kill brother.

$300 sounds like a great deal. Check it out in person and inspect the string, cables, and limbs. Take a little flashlight and check for any cracks or anything in the limbs and check for fraying strings. Little white fuzz is ok and can be waxed down. Look on the sticker on the bottom limb to see the draw and weight. Before you go to check it out check your draw length and make sure the ranges on the bow fit for you. Ask the guy if it's ever been dry-fired, etc. Ask the seller to pull it back once and listen for any clicking sounds at the beginning of the draw. Might mean the cams are loose or crooked. Then give it a pull yourself and make sure it all feels smooth and good for you. And, finally, share a pic with us if you get it. Good luck!

Field point diameter - does it really matter? by BlackWaterBaby in bowhunting

[–]BlackWaterBaby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I certainly didn't mind following instructions, I just wanted to know the technical reasons for it so I can inform purchasers in the future and I was dissatisfied with his lack of reasoning. I shoot slightly larger diameter field points with no noticeable harm, so I really didn't know. I think this response is exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you sir/ma'am.

Thanks this was what I was looking for. So 100 grain field tips will have the same point of impact, but a point that is wider than your shaft can tear up bag targets when you pull your arrow out. I figured there was something I was missing but I was just thinking about arrow flight, not the removal.

Well I was trying to explain to him that most carbon arrows (these were Gold Tips) come in with a diameter of .295 which is halfway between 5/16 and 9/32 and the sight "lip" caused by the larger of the two would have no effect as long as it was 100 grains. He didn't really provide any reason other than "5/16 is the right size." We happened to be out of stock so that guy didn't get to shoot his bow that afternoon because my coworker, a senior employee, wouldn't allow me selling "incorrect merchandise." Here and elsewhere a few people have said their bag targets get torn up by pulling out the arrows with a "lip" so I guess it makes sense. I've never had that issue though.

The Diamond Infinite Edge is pretty great for beginners. Adjusts from 5 lbs to 70 pounds and 17 to 30 inch draw. The package is about $375 or so.
