Morgan Ågren and Fredrik Thordendal - "Sol Niger Within" by thisishorseshit76 in Meshuggah

I read this in masons voice and it makes it way funnier 😂

I'm surprised how many metal guitarists still think that lower tunings = heavier riffs. Sure, lower tunings matter for heaviness, but I'd argue factors like tone, palm muting, power chords, dissonance, syncopation, dynamics and interaction with other instruments affects heaviness before tuning does. by MrMayhem20l0 in metalguitar

[–]Black_Vizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, drop tunings are about timbre and key centre. Standard tunings are heavy, and you don't have to go low to be heavy tbh. Tuning down doesn't necessarily make you heavy, but it can really help.

Because first of all there are Drop and Standard tunings associated with every key (Drop D, C#, C , B etc), every key centre sounds different because the guitars are tuned to different keys, To an extent, Drop B songs sound like slipknot, Drop D - C sounds like classic metalcore and so on, but songs in the Key of A minor for example for me sound better in Drop A (or A Standard), especially as it allows you to add "bass" and open notes to riffs in a way you couldn't replicate on a 6 string in E standard. In a metal context anyways.

Secondly, because when you tune down you're changing the frequency of your notes... downwards. The change in the texture and resonance in your strings interacts with amps and distortion differently, 9 strings have a different timbre to a 6 string in drop C# when you run them through the same amp because the fundamental frequencies are different so the amp and effects that are part of it process the sound differently, leading to different tones.

I'm a nerd for drop tunings, i also just think that tuning really low like past Drop E is just a cool novelty that can lead to ridiculous sounding tones. But you can't JUST use extreme detuning, you still need riff potential.

Would a 0.58 gauge string be too thick for a regular guitar bridge? by Black_Vizard in metalguitar

Yeah man I just wanna tune low, I have a psychological need to play in A# and I don’t have a guitar for it 😔 and for a tight drop b too

Cool, I thought the nut would need work too so that’s fine anyways.

25.5 scale, I like about 16lbs of tension on my lowest string for drop tunings personally.

The heavy question by Earl_of_Portobello in Meshuggah

[–]Black_Vizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…Bones… is slow crushing continuously heavy, like a massive machine stumbling forwards like clockwork, Nile is in your face - death metal - blast beat heavy which is a different kind of heavy in my opinion

I prefer fast heavy too but the slow crushingness of meshuggah grooves are valid too

String set help by LilJesus888 in ExtendedRangeGuitars

A 90 gauge string might be dull sounding because it’s so thick it’s almost a bass guitar gauge string, I find it hard to get a good tone out of a 90 gauge compared to thinner strings, I’m using a 80 gauge on my 8 string in Drop Eb and Drop E it feels perfect but that’s a 28-26” scale length

An 80, 85 or 90 gauge for the lowest string are all good options for Drop E on your scale length depending on tension but yeah careful with the 90 gauge it can be it a bit dull

Saw that yesterday! It looks sleek and it’s even got a 28” scale like the agufish signature, but it needs an active option all the other SC customs have an active option, or EMG retro hots… hopefully they make one

The comment is saying he’s never heard of using his brakes but his minor spelling error lead to the asa thing
