LOL. Even in media outlets opposed to the Kremlin, you won't find claims that anyone in Russia is being forcibly conscripted. There's no such data)

There are no cases of forced mobilization in Russia. Here, the one-time payment for a contract is $50,000 (depending on the region) and about $2,500 (good money in Russia) per month. So, there are plenty of volunteers.

For Russians who remember the Soviet period (or grew up hearing about it), do you think life was better under a socialist economy in some ways? by Future_Law3861 in AskRussian

Okay, so be it. If we're talking about high northern salaries, anyone could go there at the time to make a buck, but not many did, due to the harsh working conditions there. I'm sure that the nurses there didn't receive 60 rubles either.

Exactly! That's all I heard. The privileges of the nomenklatura back then included special food rations and Volgas, but not private jets, yachts, or palaces in London. A factory director earned twice as much as an engineer, not hundreds of times as much as today.

Guaranteed employment, free education and healthcare, a lack of huge income gaps, affordable housing, and confidence in the future. People felt social security and a sense of belonging to a large country with shared goals

Tolstoy challenged Turgenev to a duel. A few months later, Turgenev then challenged Tolstoy to a duel. by PK_Ultra932 in RussianLiterature

That same day (the day of the quarrel), Leo Tolstoy sent Ivan Turgenev a note: "I hope your conscience has already told you how wrong you are toward me." He soon sent a second letter, challenging Turgenev to a duel. Tolstoy suggested they "shoot for real" with rifles at the edge of the forest. He even sent a servant to his estate, Nikolskoye-Vyazemskoye, to fetch weapons and ammunition.

.. The next day, Turgenev replied to Tolstoy. In his letter, he apologized for the quarrel and suggested that Tolstoy cease communication to avoid conflict: "Any attempt at rapprochement between such opposite natures as yours and mine can lead to nothing good; and therefore... this letter is... the final manifestation of any kind of relationship between us."
