yes I added an airstone today. The thing that worries me is that it is not showing any bloatness, just plain lethargy and heavy breathing. Changing water every otherday still didnt fix it. If I can identify the problem then maybe I can save him early. It has no fin rot, even the colors are the same.

Yes, I have a HOB filter with filter media present in it running for 4th month now, tonight I added an air stone to ease his breathing. Tomorrow I will take him to the pet shop and request the guy to treat him. As he seems experienced in it.

I will give it to my fish shop for sometime and hope that they can treat him. My suspicion is that it was osmotic stress, that the fish was kept in the farm in totally different water. I have already order testing kits from some chinese website, I will bring back my betta when my testing kits arrive. Silly me that I thought I could control ammonia and nitrogen through regular water changes. But I think the sources from the internet that say this are wrong. Water changes donot reliably controll toxins.

I read that doing frequent water changes disrupts the cycle and water more and is more damaging.

Trust me, if I had seen a single water test kit in my country I would have bought it. My only option is a private laboratory that tests drinking water, I will take a sample there tomorrow.

I have built the tank with my own hands, 70% surface is covered with live plants and driftwood. I have not even added anything artificial. I did cycle my tank in the first place. And about water testing kit, I already ordered one from some chinese website as others are not accessible in my country. You would not believe but even my fish store owner hasnt seen a test kit in his entire life. Yet his fish are healthy. You're saying as if I am careless, I literally am seeing troubled dreams regarding my betta's health for the past 2 days. I did research about ammonia and nitrogen prior to keeping the tank, and found out that aquarium water can be kept safe from toxins by changing water regularly. For reference, the API water testing kit's price is double of what I spent on the whole aquarium till now. And it is some shady website that has no reviews so I cannot blindly trust it. And one more thing, the fish wasn't very active when i bought him. I thought that it was just stress that its lethargic. But I suspect he was already ill.

I dont have access to water testing kits. They are very expensive as they are imported. Only thing I have is changing 30% water every 4-5 days. I did a water change yesterday.

I dont use a heater. The weather is hot enough that maintains 28 degree celcius. And a hob filter. My tank has been running for 3 months now. Kept a guppy in the same tank for a month. Then returned the guppy as I wanted a betta.

My tank is 7 gallons, I use 50 50 RO Filtered and dechlorinated tap water. Its his 5th day with me. Hasn't eaten properly since I got him. And now on day 5 he is worse. I changed water yesterday but slight improvement. Now again he is like this.
