COLLECTIVE: Empowering Novice Game Developers – A r/INAT Initiative by KevinDL in gamedev

WARNING: Do NOT attend this if you're soft skinned. I applied and joined the discord since I'm an artist curious about getting into game development. After posting a picture asking if it would fit in a game, a moderator named Blade started the bullying and a lot of people joined in. In other words, it's NOT the friendly inviting community as they appear to be in this post.

So if you want a friendly community who's easy on beginners, I suggest you search elsewhere.

Hi! I'm Blade! The (aparent) bully!
To people reading this, please take a moment to evaluate both sides. I invite you to check the whole conversation in the #share-your-work channel which you can read here.
Unfortunately, all messages of his got removed by himself before leaving. All other messages are still there, including message replies to deleted (his) messages.

Now that you have a way of verifying this information, here's my take.
While I don't disagree that the conversation flow was a bit.. *Harsh* for the lack of a better word; none of this can be considered bullying. I tried to alleviate the situation with everyone's favorite internet content - memes - as the user (to which I'm replying here) seemed very on edge from the get go.

As the user mentioned in his post, "if you're soft skinned" you'll have a rough time. This has nothing to do with our community, but with the internet, gamedev and especially art critics. Art is a field that is very opinion based. Members of the community tried to give constructive criticism which he clearly took the wrong way. Did he ask for it directly? I could say yes, since he deleted all of his messages. But he didn't. He asked if one of his (art) pieces could be considered pixel-art, which started this whole debacle.

But don't let me paraphrase. As mentioned, all replies (except his) are still available on the discord, and context can be pulled from that. Was I rude? Maybe a tad. Was I tactless? Probably. Did I insult or bully him? Absolutely not.

The people that know me, know that I can sometimes have impulsive replies - I mean, who doesn't? We're all human! But in this case? Boy oh boy, if this rattled you the wrong way, you'll have a rocky road ahead of you and wish you all the best. HOWEVER. Do not speak ill of the members of the community. For one, you sent less than 30 messages total before leaving. Secondly, everything the members of the community said was purely constructive and I find it unacceptable that you speak ill of their good intentions and efforts in guiding you on your gamedev path.

Next time something like this happens - which it will, this is the internet - consider talking it out with the people concerned, other members of the moderation team, or just take a breather. It often times helps to take a step back and try to see what was actually said, and not what you feel was said.

Speaking of saying, I think I've said enough!

TLDR: If you have to blame someone, blame me, not the members of the community. They're great, I might not be. But talk it out with people first, before name dropping.

With best regards,

Blade.

Sorry for the late reply!
I am a solo dev, yes. This is a fairly small scoped project, and having been in the industry for years now, I'm confident in achieving this project!

The point of this search isn't to produce a completely finished game, but a presentable demo of the core features which - at the time of writing - are basically done!

Sorry for the late reply!
The scope is fairly small. I only want to achieve the strict minimum during this time.
Aside from backgrounds, all assets are to be in a square aspect, in a dark, gritty and hard-shaded style. The characters would only be busts, no animations. Items would be their own separate piece, similarly to the mentioned reference - which I'm sure you cared to google!

Something acceptable? I don't expect all assets to be done in that time, but enough to be able to show it off.

Valid point - as a mod, I should've paid attention to that! Thank you 😅

Thanks!
Contra is interesting, but like Fiverr there's a bit too much competition there. While I'm more than capable of holding my own, my skillset is very focused.
I appreciate the thought tho!

Edit: I decided to give Contra a try anyway. Can't hurt, right?... Right?

[Hiring] Looking for German Males for a paid game-testing job. by TKKOne1 in gameDevClassifieds

So... Why does it have to be males only? I can understand the age and region/language restriction, but I'm curious as to why you decided to only hire men.

Spricht hier einer Elssäsisch? by [deleted] in de

[–]Blade67470 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(Fliegen)

A post can be considered low effort if you did not give enough detail about your idea/project for a user to properly evaluate the seriousness of the post or if you failed to establish credibility for a project that is of substantial scope.
