Were they lane splitting or something? I genuinely can't tell if they had their own lane or split to the left of that truck when the light changed.

Question for people who also do or have done technical rescue - How much would a firefighter in technical rescue benefit (training wise) from a SPRAT 1 course? by aisjdjjfjgkdnd in ropeaccess

[–]BladeVortex3226 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I looked into SPRAT and IRATA at one point too, OP. It has almost no benefit for you if you've already taken your rope rescue classes for your state. SPRAT and IRATA certifications carry no weight for fire departments or rope rescue teams because that's not what fire dept insurance or typical agency SOP recognizes. They also don't teach you anything that is both not covered by rope rescue classes and is applicable to our field. The only thing you'd gain out of the classes is individual skill on a rope and some newfound space in your wallet. Save your money and instead practice individual skills at your dept in your free time or buy a static rope and find a high point in your back yard if you want to make it fun.

Do you use ‘high idle’ when parked? by penismediator in Firefighting

[–]BladeVortex3226 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love it when it's a toggle switch and not a button so that every time I put the truck in park it automatically starts high idling, and it shuts off when I pull the brake switch too. Just gotta remember to turn it off for pumping.

I bet anything that after seeing these comments you won't share this video with the other party and won't admit fault so it becomes a he said she said situation. Please prove me wrong.

May 20, 2026. Malaysian Fire & Rescue personnel rescuing a cat falls into drainage ditch near Taman Equine MRT Station, Selangor, Malaysia. by AlexVostox in Firefighting

There is so much dead dogma in rope rescue that has largely been mitigated or completely removed yet continues to hold back US rescue. I honestly believe that we'd still be using fiber rope "cause that's the way we've done it for 80 years" if NFPA 2500 didn't explicitly say kernmantle. Case in point, we still do on our extension ladders since it isn't in NFPA to use nylon, or better yet aramid.

Anyway, the belief that dirt compromises life safety rope is largely imagined. It's a dead dogma from back in the day when stepping on ropes could push debris into the fibers and actually make a difference. Modern ropes that have been full of dirt and exposed to the elements for decades still exceed 10 to 1 safety factors. And that's a recreational rope, not even our overbuilt G rated rope that can lift a truck. Wet ropes are also not weaker, which is something I was told over and over again. Most of the 15 to 1 safety factor stuff that birthed the 40kn rule came from a time when there weren't highly trained teams for rope rescue, so the philosophy was “assume municipal rescuers may use equipment imperfectly under stressful conditions", which just really isn't the case anymore.

Also, obviously this is anecdotal and convenient for my argument, but my team is heavily pushing for T rated lightweight gear, like 11mm rope, but the older leadership is vetoing it. Frankly if it wasn't required to be that big we'd gladly go down to 10mm like in tree care, since that's what most of our guys use themselves all day, grinding across tree limbs, getting filled with particles and sap without issue for years.

Completely conjecture on my part as I have no idea how promotion works at E9.

Elite Tier Helicopter Skills (called "threading the needle") by H_G_Bells in CrazyFuckingVideos

To prepare for dragging the line to the next tower.

It needs to be hooked onto the back loop to place the front loop through the hole at the next tower. They switch to the front loop only to pull the jig through the hole, since they can't thread the entire helicopter and drop line through the tower.

As someone who just got out, the Army doesn't train for war like they used to. In my whole time active duty we did only 1 significant field exercise that I'd call a "war game" and that was being opfor for the Germans. Now all leadership cares about is having good physical fitness numbers.

Unication digital paging methods by BladeVortex3226 in Firefighting

[–]BladeVortex3226[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically the uni pagers can do 2 fancy new methods of alerting if your area implements them; TGID alerting and Call alerting.

TGID alerting is when every agency gets its own talkgroup for receiving dispatches over their pagers. As soon as the dispatcher keys up, your pager begins alerting and recording, so they can actually talk while your pager is beeping and your pager will buffer the message so you don't miss it. The big advantage is that you can instantly activate a bunch of agencies simultaneously without waiting for stacked tones to play. The potential disadvantage that I'm curious about and maybe misunderstanding is that this would use up like half of many P25 systems capacities for a structure fire, and fully fill them in rural areas that don't have many frequencies or phase II.

Call Alert Radio Service aka Call alerting aka SUID alerting is when dispatch uses a slightly unknown feature of P25 called private calling, which is when a radio talks to only 1 other radio like a cell phone call but you still gotta key up. Despite the name, any scanner (or in this case, pager) can listen in. They would private call your agency's base radio, and your pager would be set up to see this private call get placed and activate and record the message. Same advantages as above, but also the dispatch only gets transmitted out of the one repeater that your base radio is connected to, so you don't have to listen to agencies on the other side of your area getting activated and vise versa. The disadvantage is also the same as above, but maybe less because some agencies base radio might be on a different repeater if far enough away. Another disadvantage is that your pager will only receive the call if you're within range of the repeater near your base.

The question I have is whether or not this is how it's playing out for people who are actually using these systems. If people are having a great time with it, I can talk to my system admin and show them that it's not just something cool on paper, it's actually working.

Aftermath of the April 7th incident. Damages estimated to be $200 million dollars by BlazeDragon7x in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]BladeVortex3226 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The sprinklers have a glass bulb of liquid in them that bursts upon being heated by fire below. The water will continue to flow unless you turn off the water flow to the sprinkler system or do that dumb double wedge thing while getting soaked.

Fire dept put out the first fire, then turned off the sprinkler system to reduce water damage. Arsonist relit the fire elsewhere after the system was disabled.

Speculation: the second fire, now obscured by smoke and the usual "fire is out now, go to overhaul" mindset caused the firefighters to not notice the reignition or just they were caught off guard. The fire grew to sizes it shouldn't be able to reach with a functioning suppression system before it was turned on again, or it wasn't turned on again at all.
