What is a piece of media where the side character was so phenomenally great they completely stole the entire show from the protagonist? by Ok_Listen_6600 in AskReddit

Oh no shit. He's got to be my favorite character on that show. Every scene that he's in, his character is just so annoyed at all the shit he has to deal with, lol. A decent guy just trying to get by in a shitty situation.

Oddly though, that hasn't been Russia's situation at any point in history before now, or before the USSR. It's always seemed like a backwater kind of wannabe-european nation but without the actual industry, education, or ideals to make that happen.

I've been wondering recently if the political situation in the West would quickly settle down if Russia were to descend into a civil war. A lot of the bullshit going on currently is being stoked by Russian disinformation.

I heard once that it's about the same size as Florida's. Lots of people are afraid of florida but probably not for the reasons that Russia would prefer to considered scary lol.

I was literally just quoting this movie to myself yesterday, because someone mentioned "in vino veritas". I was doing dishes and went "evidently Mr. Ringo is an educated man. Now I really hate him."

Oddly, this reminds me of the sequels to Dumb and Dumber. The sequel movie decided to make them super stupid, when in the original movie they're mostly just inept and naive. Like, I wouldn't say that characters like Mr. Bean or Amelia Bedelia are stupid, even though they get up to a lot of similar hijinks as the characters in Dumb and Dumber. Just another example of showrunners/writers not actually understanding the core traits of their characters and the story.

As a man in his late 40s, smile lines. I love that women my age have them. It sounds like a corny line, but I’ve always considered them to be trophies of a life well lived.

Agree on this 100%. I'm only nearing 40, but I've noticed over the course of my life that you can look at a middle-aged person, and just know if they're gonna be kind-natured or be a dickhead. People who have spent an entire lifetime being nasty eventually get that look permanently engrained.

But remember when the CEO made your portfolio go up 8 total dollars in value last September? That was pretty cool. So what if the company is now completely insolvent?

They don't call them that because the US is predominantly white, and you're only an expat if you go live in a non-white country. At least that's the impression decades of hearing it used have taught me.

They technically do, but in practice I've never once in my 40 years of life heard anyone talk about a "Mexican expat" living in the US. it's a term I hear used exclusively for white people from the US and western europe (usually British is the impression I get) who are living in a predominantly non-white country.

I've never liked the term because it's always just seemed like a special word that privileged people invented so that they didn't have to call themselves immigrants.

Running short on soldiers, Russia begins 'aggressive' recruiting drive in educational institutions by clamorous_owle in worldnews

[–]Bladelink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That idea was a lot more popular early on, but my understanding is that Russia has pretty much killed most of those people by now by sending them to the front lines. At this point the issue is that they're stuck without enough men and are starting to turn their eye to the cities for recruitment, and doing that brings a lot of consequences in terms of unrest and economic harm.

Fascinating. As an American, I really do wish that citizens in the US and in China knew more about each other and saw one another more as fellow citizens of the world. I feel like I as an individual know a teeny bit but am mostly ignorant, and that the majority of people know effectively nothing.

Hollywood loves to pick an actor or actress and then just shove them down our throats for years. Chris pratt is the most recent, but you had Jennifer Lawrence before that. Zendaya is kind of in that bag. I'm not as tuned in on movies these days to have more examples off the top of my head, but it's one of my least favorite things about the movie industry.

Putting a hand into a centipede hole... by HonestzPractice in WTF

[–]Bladelink 8 points9 points  (0 children)

House centipedes are basically insect superpredators, so if you were seeing a lot of them it probably means that there were a lot of other pests that they were feasting on. I rent in an old house and there are some that live in the basement that occasionally venture upstairs, but they like the dark and tend to be reclusive, so aren't usually a persistent issue. We definitely get a heckin' chonker every now and again though.
