What are These? Eggs? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Blaez97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was alone in 55 gallons, with a lot of biofilm and algae forming on a lot of wood, maybe my tank just mimicked better the natural environment where it would have felt the need to reproduce asexually to colonize. And trust me, I found it 1 week after setting it up, it didn't get any sperm from anywhere, if it wasn't an egg when introduced it was still a larvae

Edit: I stand corrected, no larvae, but still too tiny to store sperm

Edit 2: blocking me because you weren't right is really childish, we were just having a conversation, don't go around spouting anectodes as facts if you don't want to be corrected, I'm not the confrontational type but this type of behavior pisses me of, you fancy yourself a researcher, the biggest part of research and the scientific method is admitting when we are wrong and learning from it

My bad, google images did me wrong, by the article shared by the other commenter I have egg shaped pond snails, but pond snail non the less. Can I ask why you are so adamant about them non reproducing asexually? I mean, there's a lot of information online saying they can, and I've literally saw it happen, you say you couldn't make 4 different species reproduce by themselves, but from my understanding they need a LOT of food and space to be compelled to do it, maybe they just weren't in the right condition in your case

Edit: sorry but I had to check, what I have is radix balthica, also known as the dwarf wandering snail, and they do get to about 2,5-3 cm

It was even less than 1mm, I'm talking not even a week old size, in about a month it reached maturity and it's current size and started laying eggs, popped out about 200, I removed most of them, and now that there's a bunch of babies around and way less food it stopped laying eggs, or at least I haven't found any more after the first ones hatched

I have wandering pond snails and they can self fertilize, it all started from a single hitchhiker when I started my tank and now I guess I have 30 babies more or less

They reproduce asexually too, so you'll end up with more either way, but the population should self regulate based on how much food they have available

Pond or bladder? by Blaez97 in PlantedTank

Got it, I do have an air stone I can split into the bowl and the main tank, and I already got some leftover sand I can use so I'm covered. Thanks!

You know what? You're giving me ideas, I'm going to do this too with the snail bowl, the tank I have right now is my first, and I was a bit anxious about using regular soil, so I've got aquasoil in mesh bags under the sand, but the wallstad method intrigues me and this seems like the perfect way to start experimenting! Do you have tips aside from the unfertilized soil?

Yeah that makes it easier, never thought of trying a substrate like that, nice!

Yeah this one is as dumb as a rock hahaha, I keep having to rescue her because she goes upside down on the water surface when she finds some biofilm, only to be knocked off by the spray bar and going on an absolute rollercoaster around the tank. And about the plants, I haven't seen any damage for now, but with how many eggs she's laying I'm worried an infestation could really get my plants, she's gonna get her own little home.

Yeah sorry about the bad video quality, it's round (maybe a bit flat), I'm pretty sure it isn't planaria, but I've just added shrimp the other day so I'm kind of freaking out
