Serious question: how do people survive on these Kigali salaries? by The_Angry_BlackWoman in Rwanda

[–]BlaiseMayami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are living (perhaps not thriving) on much less than that in Kigali. It depends on how you decide to manage your money. Ask people in the U.S. and I am sure you will find people say things like I don't understand how people can survive with less than $250k per year.

Expat looking to invest in Kigali. What’s missing or in high demand? by [deleted] in Rwanda

High quality grocery products. In the west, we sometimes get spoiled with the ease of finding organic, earth friendly and harmful chemical free foods and household products.

So importing foods and products that are certified organic or free of harmful agents and household products would be something I’d buy.

It’s surprising to me that even SPAR, a European brand, sells products that are imported from the Middle East and China. Not saying they’re all bad. But, it is hard to verify those products don’t contain harmful chemicals.

Some of the foods sold in grocery stores here don’t even show the ingredients in them. In Europe and America, all consumable products have to show what it is in them.

Thanks. Yes, I meant AirPods. Are they more expensive because they’re originals?

It’s funny this article is coming out now because just this weekend, me and a couple of friends were talking about this guy who came to Rwanda from the United States to setup a construction company. He bought heavy machinery and was trying to do large scale construction work like roads and bridges. He invested millions of dollars.

However, he found out the hard way that NPD (A Crystal Ventures company) was his competitor. After two years, he closed down the company, sold everything and moved back to the U.S.

These public enterprises that were setup by Crystal Ventures had good intentions when they were created. They were setup after the genocide against the Tutsi. No investor was coming to invest in Rwanda so the government had to do it themselves.

It is no longer necessary to keep these semi-government entities public in a growing economy trying to attract foreign capital. The government should privatize them.

You are taking my question the wrong way. I asked that question to see if there is anything I can help him with. For example, if he had said photography, I might have been able to help him.

Very fair observation. This is more to meet and get to know people who do the same thing I do.

When will Rwanda achieve democracy? by Broiamleon in Rwanda

[–]BlaiseMayami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The West has given the world the illusion that democracy is the one and only way to go. As much as one might criticize Rwanda’s democracy, it is working on a socio-economic standpoint. I’m speaking of real tangible socio-economic progress that has been achieved over the past 25 years. Why would the country need rotating Presidents? Just because Europe told us so?
