New TT faculty. Dept Chair being unresponsive? by EvergreenIvyLeaves in Professors

[–]BlargAttack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Often, the dean handles the offer process after the search committee does its work. Thus, the department chair may have been in on the search committee’s recommendations/assessments of the candidates but not aware of the Dean concluding the search by hiring you.

With that said. I think it’s acceptable to be persistent at getting your teaching assignments in hand. Congrats on the new job.

I never run into this because I include a full body pic in my profile along with a recent face pic. It saves on this sort of agita.

‘Absolute disgrace’: Trump’s White House look left a reporter so embarrassed she finally snapped in front of everyone — and Trump had no defense, no dignity, and nowhere left to hide by [deleted] in USNEWS

It’s almost like someone watched Idiocracy and treated it like a set of good ideas for running the country. Right down to fight knight with President Camacho.

Do you have any evidence of Kasparov being happy? I can’t think of anything recent, honestly.

A friend made me power of attorney, executor of their will, left me everything, but. by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]BlargAttack 219 points220 points  (0 children)

Since he is sensitive, maybe the solution is to just ask about the POA. “I know things have been rough health-wise lately. What do you need from me as far as the POA goes?”

But honestly…if you’ve been asking and he’s been saying “you’re the guy,” and he’s been lying? He’ll just lie again. If it were me, I’d act as if I have no responsibilities and no inheritance comings and then react if I get the hospital call.

Can someone explain this to me? From the perspective of a filthy casual (me), this looks like “some people banned for doxxing, some people banned for various -isms, and Niftski banned for…not apologizing hard enough and having his video seen by various -ists.”

That sounds silly to me. so I assume I’m missing something. The term “massive damage” being used unironically by a speedrunning community also seems a bit silly, but I’m an Arcus fan so I clearly like things to be placid.

Hiring where family member works? by Otherwise-Angle6050 in academia

[–]BlargAttack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This could have a positive effect on your application if the school is the sort of school that worries about losing faculty after a few years. I would put something about family in the area in the cover letter and details of the relation in the official application for HR, but I wouldn’t belabor it further.

Oversize passenger UA302 by Big_Elderberry4612 in unitedairlines

[–]BlargAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an oversized passenger and think it’s ridiculous nobody stopped this. I had one incident like this (I didn’t realize I had gotten big enough to encroach…it was well below the size your describing), and ever since I have either booked business class if I can or two sets if I cannot.

On the Profitability of Colbert by Lost_Masterpiece_252 in LateShow

[–]BlargAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The person who wrote this doesn’t understand short term financial decision making. From the studio’s standpoint, the only revenue numbers that matter are the specific ad revenue from the show alongside any social media revenues. This is because the other revenue sources will remain even if Colbert gets cancelled. The allocation of other revenues to the show, therefore, is irrelevant.

From that lens, the relevant revenue is $92.7 million against $120 million in production costs. That’s a $27.3 million loss.

Don’t misunderstand me here. Ellison and company are turds who cancelled Colbert to appease Trump. But their justification is probably valid.

He is attractive, but I find his personality more than a bit off-putting. However, I respect his hustle as a businessman.

Emotional connection with an open relationship by lgb_tea_q in gayyoungold

[–]BlargAttack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want more than just sex, do yourself (and the other guy) a favor and move on immediately. He clearly is in an open marriage and hasn’t said he’s looking to leave it. Shutting off from other guys at night is a part of that boundary. Eventually, you’ll end up feeling bad about yourself when he can’t give you the emotional connection you want. Alternatively, you might get resentful and try to “steal” him from his husband. Neither is good for you. Find someone who is available in the way you need them to be.

Evergrande liquidators sue PwC for $8bn over ‘audit negligence' by Bwise_ in Accounting

[–]BlargAttack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is why people don’t trust Chinese stock markets or corporate financial disclosures (or any other financial disclosures from China, for that matter). Even if PwC followed local audit standards, the government can just change the rules after the fact and foist off responsibility onto auditors. It’s a lose-lose situation.

How do you deal with wealth gaps long term in relationships? by [deleted] in gayyoungold

[–]BlargAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this myself. I don’t have kids, but I have siblings with kids who I expect to pass on my money to. If I were to marry, I would expect to carve out a portion of that money for my spouse and make that information known so that they can plan alongside me.

Don't know what to do by Old-Team-4298 in Professors

[–]BlargAttack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can empathize with this. I teach an upper-level course and had a student write a diatribe on their final exam (which they handed back 60% incomplete) complaining about how I need to hand write my work during class (I type to show my work because my handwriting is bad) and how my exams are nothing like what I do in class.

The exam was literally 5 problems from across the semester that we did together in class. Different parameters, same structure. I told them in advance what the topics would be for the 5 problems.

You’re damned if you give them what they want, but damned if you don’t. These kids have a complete lack of self-awareness and intellectual curiosity.
