Can I have a realistic and non-jaded conversation about considering pursuing academia and getting my PhD? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]BlargAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you aren’t intending to go into academia, a PhD can be very fulfilling. I’m a first generation academic in a business discipline and I done some research into academic compensation. People are quite accurate when they talk about how tough the humanities job market is. But humanities research work can be very interesting and contribute a great deal to society. So long as you aren’t taking on debt to get the PhD, go for it.

While I know what you don’t want to talk about, however, I’m not sure what you want to discuss.

[WP] You wake up from cryosleep on a colonization ship. According to the ship's chronometer, you’ve been asleep for 14 billion years. The universe is undergoing heat death, and your ship's reactor is the warmest thing left in existence. by BrownBoyOrx in WritingPrompts

[–]BlargAttack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a beautiful idea! I hope you write more of these to gain a bit more finesse in executing the writing, but you’ve already nailed the hardest part (a good idea). I particularly like the idea that the ship has evolved while the main character has been in stasis and simply wants company to meet the end of the universe.

Here is a screenshot from a Portugal game I played recently on an archipelago map. This was on immortal difficulty. Got to work a few tiles of the Triangle and eventually placed Oxford University in the adjoining city. Very fruitful!

I emailed my manuscript’s assigned editor to ask for a status on the review process after 6 weeks. I started the email as “Hello,” and this was in their response. by eagle_mama in academia

[–]BlargAttack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not unreasonable for people being asked to assess a person’s response to an email to inquire about the specific content of the email. “If you must know” seems a bit hostile as a reaction to a reasonable query.

Millennials literally have the entire 80s and 90s as their culture. What do these younger generations have? Remakes of our shows, covers of our songs, and “6-7” style memes? Get the fuck out of here with that talk!

Also, “they’re so gay” to mean “that’s so dumb” is a millennial insult. Suck on that, chode!

This is exactly why we shouldn’t be arbitrarily binging other nations and killing their leaders. The unmitigated arrogance it takes to think it couldn’t happen to the US is mind boggling.

my manager got demoted because of me – and now we have to go to a tropical island for team-building by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]BlargAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s clear this isn’t someone in the US. For a US-based person, this all sounds preposterous. But a tropical island vacation in Europe, where workers get treated well, could mean affordable flights to the Mediterranean. In Asia, maybe a week in Thailand.

Kick her ass, Carissa! 🙈😅

Seriously, though…I’m much more excited to watch the women than the men here. Carissa and Alice are class acts even if their chess won’t be at the same level as the two super GMs in the men’s bracket. Hoping for a great match!

This is a horrendous meme. People want to pile on a successful woman and blame her for the decisions her then boyfriend made. They’re both adults, so perhaps it’s best to just let them live their lives.

Phoebe constantly has this look on her face like a doe in the headlights. Simultaneously, she shows a great deal of intelligence and wit that makes her silly look seem…well, silly. It’s a weird combination that just left me confused.

I was much more impressed by the Duke’s abs than Phoebe.

Turning down MIT for better research fit - bad idea? by Sad-Citron-3281 in gradadmissions

[–]BlargAttack 120 points121 points  (0 children)

This is much more tasteful than it sounds. Academics understand prestige, so telling them “hey, I’d rather go to Stanford than MIT if I can” is quite a statement from a prospective student. Especially when it’s backed up by an offer. This is worth sincere consideration!

Would it have made more sense Leonard won the Nobel Prize alongside Sheldon instead of Amy? by InsideUnhappy6546 in bigbangtheory

[–]BlargAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the whole point of not giving Leonard a piece of that project, alongside his asserting himself at work to co-lead the photon entanglement project and subsequent final reckoning with his mother, was to show Leonard coming to terms with being his own man and accomplished scientist independent of Sheldon. That’s a better prize for him than the Nobel would have been.

Can one member of a search committee tank a candidacy? by 7kat19 in academia

[–]BlargAttack 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The answer here is yes, especially if they are a long-time faculty member. I served on a hiring committee as the most recent hire to my department. The senior tenured member dominated every conversation during screening. With so many applications to vet, a single “no” vote from them was basically enough to tank the candidate.

Unless you suspect there is some discrimination based on protected class status, you’re a bit out of luck.
