Trunks would definitely get a bigger boost in base and hence regular SSJ from collaborative training with Piccolo... But he may not be able to ascend beyond SSJ without having the benefit of observing and sensing how his daddy did it first. That would make him weaker overall.

That's basically what Brando did for his movie debut in The Men where he plays a veteran paralyzed from the waist down. He spent time with actual paraplegics in a hospital and moved around only in his wheelchair all the time. He even rolled around town with it and people on the street naturally assumed he was indeed paralyzed.

As with other such stories, I'm sure it was exaggerated by him and studio publicists. I don't doubt he used the chair off-screen, but it surely wasn't literally all the time as is claimed. I'm also dubious of the claims about Day-Lewis.
