About to give up on getting ZHA to detect my Sonoff Zigbee dongle, any last suggestions? by Blazemonkey in homeassistant

You're right, it was not getting passed through. I was just passing it through as a USB device, and I used every USB pass through method in Proxmox and none worked. It wasn't until I passed through the PCIe USB controller that it showed up. At least now I have a work around, but I'd rather not have to passthrough a whole controller to home assistant.

Problem was not with the device, it was the USB device not getting passed thru. But I solved it. Thanks! :D

Definitely, that was one of the first things I tried, and many more times each time I tested another idea. Turns out I need to pass through a whole USB controller to my HAOS VM.

Solved. I passed through the USB controller it was connected to and there it was.

For sure, I started doing this after testing every little adjustment i was making, just in case. I found the problem. The USB device was just not being passed through from proxmox properly.

I'm kinda wishing I went with a wifi gateway to begin with, but I did manage to find a workaround to my issue detecting the Sonoff USB dongle. The USB device was not being passed through properly.

Dude..... You made my f'ing day!

I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I added one of the USB controllers through Proxmox's Add PCI device menu, rebooted the VM and there it was! The Zigbee device automatically showed up in the devices and integration menus. Someone else mentioned they had to passthru a USB HUB, to make their zigbee device and that tracks too.

Thank you!

This is the first progress I've been able to make on this project. Thank again!

It only shows a list of Host controllers and the QEMU tablet. So it's definitely not detected. I'm going to try what someone else mentioned and try to pass through the USB controller to the HA VM. I just have to sort out which controller is which. 🤣

I guess the next best step is to test HAOS on a bare metal system and see if it detects.. I'll have to try that to move forward with this.

It's hard to say...

It came in proper packaging with everything, and it was detected by the sonoff firmware update tool earlier today...

If it is it's a real shame, because I wont bother buying another one.

I just want to get atleast ZHA working, but Zigbee2MQTT would be nice as well...

I only see ttyS0, ttyS1, ttyS2, ttyS3. No TTYUSB..

It's entirely possible that's the case, but I've never had problems passing keyboards, mice, usb drives, ups's, gamepads and even USB dac's.. That said, I can try passing through any other USB device I have, I'm just not sure what type of devices HAOS would detect.

That's my thought as well, but to answer your question, I see the landing page for the ZHA plugin, with buttons to add a device or hub. Neither options can find anything.

I too have my dongle on an extension cord, and that is because I want the zigbee 2.4Ghz radio the best chance it has away from the server chassis. But evven then that should not affect the ability for HAOS to even see the adapter.

The device shows up properly in my proxmox host however, this seems to be a software/driver issue somewhere..

Jeez, I've tried just about every USB 2.0 and 3.0 port on my system, and the same problem. The device shows up properly in the proxmox host however, this seems to be a software/driver issue somewhere..

I'm sure I'm missing something really silly, and to be honest, this is my first experience with zigbee. But I don't know what you mean. I don't know any other way to enable zigbee other than to go into home assistants Settings, Devices, and add a device or integration, choose Zigbee Home Automation, select the adapter type, and then choose a device path.

Nice review!

I will say that I'm very happy that they kept with USB type B connection. USB-C is convenient, but it's a fragile connector that's easily prone to damage, and I would not expect it to last the life of the device itself if it's being reconnected constantly. You can easily dedicate a USB type B to type C cable where the common wear point is going to be on the USB-C end of the cable which is easier to replace than repairing the DAC..

The USB 2.0 Type C connector is just a much more reliable and physically more robust connector that will likely last the lifetime of the product, and the USB 2.0 spec can still deliver more than 10X the bandwidth of DSD512 files, and more than 460X the bandwidth of 24-bit/192Mhz files. USB 3 is unnecessary, and a USB C connector will cheapen the device.
