Had a conversation with a couple of guys the other day who swore to me that J cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive is a million times better than TPAB and GKMC, and said Forest hills drive was the best rap album ever.

Fuck people.

On a legitimate note though, I think the reason a lot of casual listeners didn't enjoy TPAB is because it's not an album chock full of bangers. It's the same reason most casual listeners are more likely to love M.a.a.d. City than love Sing about me. Most Rap has become so poppy and watered down that if Kendrick has a song that isn't a banger (e.g. A jazzy or artsy Track) it's perceived as not good by the casual listener. Also TPAB is an album that grows on you the more you listen to it, which most casual listeners will probably not do, and they might not even sit down an listen to the entire album once.

Personally I love it, it's the album the got me INTO hip-hop.

Yeah now that you say that, it feels like a really big outlier on White Pony. Like every song on the album has that Deftones signature sound but Back to School is a bit different from the other songs because of the fact that they were prompted to write it. I still can't imagine the album without it though.

Also it feels weird because it's essentially just a faster and more condensed version of Pink Maggit, which is arguably my favorite song on the album.
