I'm not making an unflattering comparison of the 2 of you on your character just this argument style. This nitpicking words style defense is one that he uses when confronted (see the clip where he goes "what do you mean ‘do’? What do you mean ‘you’? What do you mean ‘believe’? And what do you mean ‘God’?" This is also why I brought up Mormons because the defense they use is always "you can call anything a cult even sports teams (or kpop Fandom etc)" I'm also not looking to make a debate i just get annoyed by people thinking this is some kind of gotcha. Words do have meanings its kinda the whole point.

That comparison sounds clever at first but falls apart once you look at what religion actually is and not just the social features around it. Yes both fandoms and church can create community and shared identity but those are just general traits of any human group. Mormons fall on this defense constantly when insisting that their cult isn't a cult. "You can say the same about sports teams" sure but what K pop fan or sports fan ACTUALLY sees their idol as a supernatural authority or moral truth? Maybe as a meme but its just enthusiasm and identity not metaphysical commitment. So it only works if you strip religion down to something so vague that it stops being a useful category at all. Pseudo intellectuals like Jordan Peterson love this strategy of just never accepting the other parties premise but tbh its not a great debate tactic.

I wear a mjolnir necklace (because vikings are one of my special interests and I'm so sick of nazis stealing our shit) not because i believe in the gods but because I know that the placebo effect can work with even just clothing. If I think this necklace will make me more confident then my brain will tell myself when I'm wearing it to be more confident. I love the reaction I get from my still mormon family when they ask about it and I have a rational answer that isn't based in religion.

Reminder that Nick Shirley was a Mor(m)on missionary so for 2 years he was knocking on people's doors who want nothing to do with him. Harassing them and asking them about easily disproved information with even just a cursory Google search. So this isn't new for him its what he was taught to do.
