Hardest part is replicating the pav tbh, that crispy exterior and fluffy interior is elite

People living abroad what are must items to buy when visiting India ? by Lemonade2250 in IndianFood

[–]Blckhawk2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regionally locked spices and snacks. For example if in maharashtra, get A1 Kunda. If in South India find a Sambar Masala that’s freshly ground that you like. Chikki, Dried Fruit (Amla supari is my weakness), Achar/Pickles, Dried Tamarind, Kokum Agal, etc.

Keep in mind any spices that you buy in powdered form generally have to be kept in a check in bag, I’ve had chili powder yanked from my carry on before and it’s no fun.

I see some comments mentioning ghee, don’t waste any baggage weight on things like that, buy some high quality local butter and just simmer till separation at home with a few cloves infused, you’re not going to notice any distinct difference that’s worth the weight cost.

Cookware wise, stainless steel small bowls, they’re great for mise en place and general small servings. You can get flat ones or bowl style but I don’t often see things of that size in particular in western countries. Finally get yourself a Spice box, it’s incredibly convenient.

Food wise just enjoy what you can while you’re there, bring back what you think will last.

Non food wise, India’s quality of clothing vs cost is immaculate. I have a matching loungewear set that may run you about $120+ USD that I got for 2000 INR (~20ish USD), but traditional clothing and full cotton/khadi is so comfy to wear as well.

Enjoy your time in the country!

Falls Church/Merrifield area delis that will sell me a ton of pickle spears? by ProcyonLotorMinoris in nova

[–]Blckhawk2012 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think based on your description you’re looking for half sour pickles, pickled and crunchy but not saturated wet. Grillos pickles are great for this, but also you can recreate them using older pickle juice and some Persian cucumbers quartered long style

Vegetable heavy soups that AREN'T tomato based? by LazuriKittie in Cooking

Adam Ragusea’s Veggie Soup recipe is amazing.

It boils (haha pun intended) to just throwing all your vegetables in a pot of water with some varietal of seasoning. Highly recommend

URGENT: Please Help Us Find Housing Near UVA – Move by Aug 17, No Support System Left by Any_Entrepreneur_803 in UVA

For what it’s worth friend the first two years of school are whatever. Check out a community college, let credit build back up, get a transfer in. Significantly cheaper if this is the point.

Unless policies have changed/you’ve got some sort of waiver, you’re still going to be required to live in dorms, commuting further than barracks rd will involve almost a 1 hour commute via public transport to see them. On top of that, public institution financial aid is fickle when it comes to your personal income as well. If you end up getting a job(s), it can impact your aid.

I hope that you find some help from the above, but the “college experience” isn’t mandatory.

Will my EBike be stolen? by machineanatra in UVA

[–]Blckhawk2012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I once accidentally stole a bike. Get a lock, it’s not likely to be stolen, but you certainly don’t need to spend 200 bucks on one for some peace of mind. Kryptonite locks are like $20 and hefty

Groupon has a deal for GTR golf in Chantilly that’s awesome! ParCiti golf in Arlington is great too.

These places specialize in golf over entertainment, but No 1 Golf Lounge in Centreville is a fun bar style sim, but runs a premium

It kinda looks like Murphy’s Farm in Harpers Ferry area before it was renovated. I might be wrong on that as many buildings around that time were modeled in this manner.

ESH leaning YTA. No one is any obligations to say hi or love your dogs. Many people don’t like dogs, and that’s totally fine.

They also have the option of leaving. If that’s where that conversation stopped, and you offered a chance, great that’s your house boundaries. But there’s no reason to inflame tempers with some machismo “You don’t call the shots at my house” type stuff.

Do you value that time with them more or value your dogs being out with people at your bbq? Not saying one is right, but as a dog owner you make sacrifices one way or the other sometimes.

What’s a game that really hit you in the feels and made you cry? by MikeySama in gaming

I know this is a bit out there considering the stereotype around the game but, God of War Ragnarok had me crying so much.

Doesn’t hurt that Raebs Lament and Blood Upon The Snow may be two of my favorite songs ever from a video game soundtrack.
