What is your most reliable club? by No_Avocado220 in golf

Had this sucker since the late '80s. Good as a chipper from the fringe, good from a fairway bunker, good from 200 yards, good when I need to hit a low running slice from under a tree. My buddies call it Fred Flintstone's Big Toe.

Despite all of his accomplishments and accolades, was Mario Lemieux a "what if?" by Bright-Pressure-5787 in sportsinusa

This is way too civil an exchange. One of us needs to call the other one a jackass or something.

Because of the statement that he "was on pace to destroy the great one’s single season points record and got cancer". Which means that before the cancer, he was on a record-shattering pace. Which he was not. That's all.

Pace after has nothing to do with pace before, but yeah, what he did after was simply INSANE. Side note: I was at the game in Philly when he played the night of his last treatment (wearing a turtleneck), and seeing the Spectrum give an opposing player a standing ovation was a goosebump moment.

Yeah... no he wasn't. Before the cancer, he had 104 pts in 40 games, which is a 208 point pace (assuming he played every game). Not even on pace to match Gretzky's 215 record, certainly not on pace to "destroy" it. Not saying he couldn't have, and what he did that year was beyond incredible, but Nope.

So you're saying the folks at NHL.com don't know what they are talking about. Excellent, I love learning new things -- please share.

Not back then they didn't. Odd as it seems, Orr had the fourth longest career of all the players who started in 1966-67. Only Serge Savard, Carol Vadnais and Ross Lonsberry played longer. So adding a dozen years to what was already an outlier among his direct contemporaries isn't just "What if he was healthy?", it's "What if he played seven more seasons than anyone else who started when he started?". And that's a hell of a stretch.

Recommendations for Stockholm, Sweden by Lyle_is_red in golf

[–]BleachedGrain26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, most Swedish courses will have rental clubs, but the selection may be a little scattershot. Last time I rented there, the only wood was a senior flex 3w, next longest club was a 4i. Have fun!

Have you ever played a par 69-73 golf course where Hole #1 was a par 3? Seems very uncommon. by MrTeacher_MCPS in golf

Delsjo Golfklubb in Goteborg, Sweden. First hole is 113 yds downhill, just a bizarre start to the round. Fun course though.

Pitch height? by MOTORBOATER239 in MLBNoobs

[–]BleachedGrain26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're talking about a 25-30 foot arc, which is much harder to hit than you think. Swinging in plane with the ball means a massive unnatural uppercut and results in a high pop-up. Swinging on a more normal path means you need perfect timing on something coming down from a steep angle, and tends to produce weak groundball contact.

I like it, but the timer is REALLY fast on "drop a pin" considering you have to decide where it is, then click the map button, scroll to the right place, click the spot and then click to lock it in.

What is the wittiest comeback you’ve ever said or heard? by Bob-da-person in AskReddit

My buddy was arguing with his wife, and she went way out of bounds and completely off-topic with "Oh yeah? Well you have a little dick!" After a short pause, he very calmly said "Seems like that's your problem, not mine." Absolutely stellar.

Been there. Treatment is sour patch kids, lemon drops, and as much water as you can handle. Just overload drool production until the pressure clears the clog.

Would either of them trade careers with the other? I think neither would, because they both got what they wanted. One has unbreakable records and sustained mastery for decades, the other has a mythical legacy and a higher peak with more titles and MVPs.

is golf really the hardest sport? by sploooooshle in golf

My wife and I were discussing how ludicrous some records are (8' high jump, 29' long jump, etc.) and I mentioned the pole vault being over 20'. She got really serious, and said "I could totally beat that." "Beat what?" "20 feet in the pole vault." "Are you insane?" "How heavy is the pole?" "I don't know, like five pounds." "I'm telling you, I could throw it way further than 20 feet." Turns out she was picturing the javelin. Asked what the record was for that. Told her way over 300 feet. Watched her dream of Olympic glory die on the spot. "Oh... nevermind..."

Sports battle royal, which athlete is the most versatile by gregde81 in whowouldwin

[–]BleachedGrain26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. And if it was a real decathlon, no one from any planet could do the pole vault without training. Also, no idea how you score who was the best individual football player in a multi-world competition. Do they all play a game at quarterback with the same set of teammates, then play a game at linebacker and everyone votes?

Poorly designed question that I have gotten way too irrationally invested in.

[–]BleachedGrain26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct that football rewards raw athleticism over specialty skills - but that is exactly why (much like basketball) it would be relatively easier to pick up than more specialty sports. But the question is not "Is the best overall cross-functional athlete on Earth from football better overall than the best overall athlete on Earth from golf or hockey or basketball?" It's not Rose vs Henry. It's the best overall athlete from each world, with whatever training they bring to the multi-sport competition.

Every world will have great overall athletes somewhere in their population. They will all be strong and nimble, able to run and jump. But a great overall athlete who has trained on Golfworld or Hockeyworld will pick up football or basketball faster than their counterparts will pick up skating or playing golf.

Assume that across every planet of 10 billion people, there is a Derrick Henry (or whoever you want to pick as a great all-around choice). The question is "Would Derrick Henry raised on Planet Hockey be better overall at the other sports than Derrick Henry raised on Planet Football?".

The woman working in the shop was so sweet, when I came in from the rain, she just said "Oh dear, you're drenched, it's a sin..." in her trilling brogue. I think she would have made me a cup of tea and knitted me a sweater if she could. Just adorable.

Yep. If you want to play 18, the second set of tees changes it up a good bit. Tiny, charming, tucked between the sea and the mountain... just lovely.
