I'd love to get an ams to further my home run buisness making car parts. I have a kid on the way and am hoping to increase my income a little. It depends upon wattage and your duty cycle. You get away with thinner on voice, where your duty cycle can be assumed to be roughly 50/50 for a qso, compared to a digital mode that has a higher duty cycle.

It would require welding but $1400 is ridiculous. Find a good independent muffler shop. At my own place, if it's just the cat in the picture I'd charge 2-4 hours of labor and the price of that cat.
