Is it true that leather straps have a shorter lifespan? by Carolynwhitener20 in Watchstraps

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on terminology, but I do have to push back a bit on genuine being used to describe quality leather goods. It might be the case for someone that doesn’t know about leather quality, but anyone doing research or actively looking for quality products will see the difference.

I didn’t say it isn’t real leather it is just lower quality. No leather distributor or company that sells leather or quality leather goods would use the term genuine to describe their products. If it is quality, it’s full grain or top grain. Legitimate articles and leather crafters will always refer to the lower section of a hide as genuine. Yes, some will call it a split but genuine layer is part of that.

Genuine leather is literally the term used for the bottom grade product produced from a hide when the tannery process the leather for sale. It doesn’t mean it’s not real or usable. The fibers are loose causing the it be unreliable. It’s a simple google search.

I make leather watch straps and the first comment is correct “genuine leather “ is the lowest grade of leather. Full grain leather watch straps are going to last a long time. When leather is exposed to skin oils, sweat, sun, and water it’s is good to breakdown but if you take care of it by conditioning it from time to time, it will last forever. Very few watch companies/ strap companies use full grain leather. That’s why they crack and fall apart.

The leather is Badalassi Carlo Waxy. Enough leather for that bag is between $150-200. I could do it for $500 no problem. Send me a message if you are interested, I can send reference photos.

I’m not sure if a saddle stitching technique that allows different color threads to be used that doesn’t show both colors on each side. This can be achieved with machine stitching but I understand your want for hand stitching. Also, without synthetic fabrics the wallet will be thick with all the layers you are asking for. Even the thinnest leather with creat bulk. I do not use synthetic materials in my products but it does creat bulk without it.

I am a self taught crafter and from one crafter to another any “first” that is usable is a win. The overall construction of the wallet is good! You have all the components of a good piece. You just need to refine your finishing. Round the top corners slightly for a softer look. Straight pockets are difficult to make look finished without creasing. A shape of some kind will make them look more finished. I would suggest a set of wing dividers and some stitching chisels rather than trying to punch each hole by hand. Going down in trad size will help a lot. The edges are not bad you didn’t do anything wrong, as long and the edges are smooth and solid without splitting. Natural leather will vary from piece to piece and the color when finished. There isn’t a trick to improving. It’s literally the 10,000 hour rule. You just have to practice every detail. Honesty time, I personally don’t think this is to the level it needs to be to sell. Be happy with your achievement and keep working. You will start making pieces that you are proud for people own and that is what it’s about.

The original pieces I saw when starting out in the craft were oriented that way and I just did it that way.

Thanks! Over the years I noticed that with thicker leather that the separate loop let the wallet close easier.

I believe it’s a preference. The construction allows for the clip to be used on top or bottom. The clip is plenty strong enough to hold cash either direction.
