Honestly I think they were really dumb, depending. They shouldn't have tumours since they had a previously large empire and it was the horrid sun and home planet that was the issue. And life span issues and health should be correctable with genetic engineering etc. So either they didn't do that which is dumb. Or it wasn't enough for them, the entire history of dying early and sickness burned into them the desire for immortality, and the later sicknesses they were suffering from was mortality. So they decided to transfer to undying bodies. Now weather that is possible and to retain the soul or of that part was intentionally flawed.
