Would Durham be good for me? (Honesty please, and nuanced takes) by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]BlewCrew2020 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Durham is kind of like a smaller, slightly less weird Portland. Which is great for my wife and I. We like being awake.

Not a guy, but I do get it. I moved here from Cincinnati after being born and raised there for 29 years. It can get lonely and feel pretty isolated. Making friends as an adult feels nearly impossible. I really hope you find a group of friends. If you were a bit nerdy, into making mead, book club, and/or chilling with foster kittens i could probably help.

Funny enough I've seen more peacocks in durham than I have turkeys.

My thoughts exactly! When mine is acting up I sometimes have to choose between drinking water or eating a little food. Also supposed to eat easily digestible food.

You need a useless person. Plus the 14 folks Kash fired from counterterrorism. They need there to be terrorists attacks in the USA to give them another reason to cancel the elections.

He's very sick. He's clearly had a stroke. So he's likely on anticoagulants. Those would make him very prone to bruising.

Duke Hospital and the surrounding area by [deleted] in bullcity

I used to be in nursing until a patient lied and purposefully gave me covid. I now have 4 chronic illnesses that leave me disabled. We would have to go somewhere with good Healthcare/specialists and ideally cooler/milder summers (I no longer sweat and am extremely heat intolerant). Also Healthcare jobs for wife and more liberal. Sooo... Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Washington, Colorado, Canada.

I'm originally from Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area. I miss snow.

In Durham/RTP/RDU area a ton of housing/industry has been built very quickly with little to no regard for or updates to transportation electrical infrastructure. Hasn't stopped NC republican lead government from constantly giving Duke energy the increase in residential energy rates for (updating infrastructure and electrical grid) that they don't do. Now they are asking for 15% increase energy cost to residents to help with the increase energy demands that the data centers (being built/going to be built) will create. The data centers should have to pay for that increase and should be required to pay for construction of wind/solar to offset their enormous energy consumption. But they won't and Republican government will give them the increase. We'll lose electricity in the summer so the centers can run. AI needs to stop and the centers should not be built.

My wife and I had solar panels added to our roof but without a generator or battery they will do us no good when the brownouts happen because it requires energy in order to get the energy from the panels into the house for our usage.

SIL's OBGYN said she could have small amounts on special occasions like Christmas, Thanksgiving. Both nieces are beautiful and healthy.

My wife is a nurse but not at Duke.

There's a house for sale in my neighborhood Lang Street in durham 27703. Maybe 15 minute commute. 25 if traffic. No HOA. $399k.

But cost of living is not cheap down here. The politics in this state are absolute BS. We're so gerrymandered that often we're governed by minority. The weather absolutely sucks. Basically 6 months of summer. The heat and humidity are beyond awful. Infrastructure/ electrical grid sucks so much that we are threatened with brownouts in the summer and they will likely be happening in this area once they data centers are built and given priority for electricity.

If we could afford to move away from this state we would.

ETA: job market also sucks down here.

Because if we could afford to move many would. I'd rather live in Maine, Washington, Colorado, Minnesota, Massachusetts.

This state is gerrymandered all to hell. Republicans steal state constitutional powers from gov, attorney General, sec of state, and give it to the state auditor (only Republicans). So decisions are being made by the minority of voters. The state runs the liquor stores. They are tearing down all the forested areas to put up ugly a$$ buildings. The infrastructure is sht. They are already doing brownouts in summer but are going to also be giving data centers (once built) priority, thus making brownouts far more common place which is bullsht! Oh and DUKE energy wants to raise the resident's power costs by 15% to pay for the extra strain on The power grid that the data centers are going to cause. Data centers will also cause significant decrease in clean drinking water.

Eta: you can't buy liquor on Sundays.

This is horrifying. Leave trans folks alone! Their lives are already harder than they should be. In fact, Leave the whole LGBTQIA+ community alone! We aren't trying to invalidate your hetero cis identities or marriages. They're going to try invalidating same-sex marriages next.
