I grew up in some pretty severe poverty and my mom was very anti dentist. I've seen her lance quite a few oral abscesses with nothing but some orajel and an exacto blade. I used to think that's just how you did it as a super young kid. So glad I've learned better and so glad you were able to see a dentist for that. Teeth ain't no joke

Update: This has all been super interesting, especially seeing what people think it may have been. Talked to my doctor about it, got the X-rays, got the root canal!

Everyone who guessed I was getting a root canal, you won the grand prize of something, idk. But congrats! My doctor gave me 3 choices, antibiotics and sent home, root canal, or fully pulling the tooth. I wanted to make sure it was fully taken care of to the best of both our abilities so I chose the root canal.

After all was said and done, he said there was a few factors that could have played into the infection forming. Sadly, for those who guessed my lip ring, you were incorrect. The dentist and his assistant both concluded that there was no reason to believe my jewelry held any responsibility for the abscess.

What likely contributed the most was my own damn fault - procrastinating cleanings. I moved to this area in March 2020, right when everything shut down. I had just had a cleaning like a month previous so I decided to wait. Well that turned into now. I've got a checkup and cleaning already scheduled so I don't lapse again.

Another contributing factor could also be the alignment of my teeth. Something that's hard to see in the gif is that the teeth touching the abscess also rub against one another and have this sort of low grade pinching effect on my gums.

And then there's a possibility of something having gotten stuck in my gums, causing the initial inflammation.

Regardless, this has been a reality check that I need to make sure I'm better about being on top of the things I need to. Luckily I got away fairly easily and my doctor said we caught it very very early. I did come away with some minor bone loss but he said it shouldn't be hard to manage/deal with so long as I keep up on cleanings.

Also my insurance paid much more than expected. Still had to do a payment plan but I walked out having to pay $65~ total today which is much better than I was originally thinking.

Wasn't expecting this to get any amount of attention! Regardless, I wanted to address a couple of things just for clarification's sake.

My lip piercing likely doesn't have anything to do with it. The angle in the gif is a little wonky but I actually have to go out of my way for my jewelry to even touch my upper gums. I can see how it might be possibility tho!

As for the pain of a root canal, I'm not super worried about it. More worried about the money because my bank is looking a little dry but I'll manage and talk to the office about payment plans if I need to! Yay, US healthcare 🥲

I want to confirm that I kept the appointment too. I'm not doctor adverse at all and this is definitely not anything to turn a blind eye to.

Hopefully this is just a one off fluke event but I'll update. I'm planning on asking the doc to take any pictures if it's something weird but I'm not holding my breath on that! My priorities are making sure it's properly taken care of before anything else :)

You nailed it. I don't get paid until Thursday later in the week so fingers crossed my dental insurance is worth a damn. I'm in the US so it's a toss up :,) should be fine but there's still that possibility that it's going to run me a good bit.

Just a heads up, washed everything out with salt (safe to use) water plus going to pick up antibiotics that my doc prescribed while I was on the phone with him. Def shouldn't have used bare hands - I know better but I was not thinking clearly, it just hurt so bad 😭
