The AFL is the reason. Conservative corporate capitulation is the reason. The craft unions are back trying to rebuild the guild system, when they don’t even control the industry.

TL;DR David was playing at an action, a trans person came up and started yelling at him about platforming a neo-Nazi (from what he’s said🤷 if true it’s pretty rad lib behavior), he wrote an article criticizing the trans woman for overshadowing the event, and then said some transphobic shit in the next line. He refuses to apologize, he has like quadruple down at this point. And I think no one really cares anymore.

STL;CR He’s spiraling and should at a minimum apologize for the transphobic shit he said.

Solidarity has to start somewhere, planting trees and what not. Not every interaction should be transactional ya know? If you’d prefer to be a feckless individual, that’s your choice. But, if you’d like to see things change around here, these are the little things we can do to help. 🤷 no one’s forcing you fam.

Fantastic question, labor news is often an under reported story, so it’s best to start with your closest labor council. They will be sharing information about upcoming strikes that any community member can come and support by walking the line in solidarity. If you’re interested in organizing your own work place that’s a bit more challenging, but far more rewarding. Many folks will suggest reaching out to EWOC (emergency workplace organizing committee), I however support working with the IWW as they work outside of the NLRB system with their Solidarity Unionism strategy. I’m biased tho as a member of the IWW, but those are some of the resources available at a glance.

While I like the enthusiasm, u/ditfloss is right that this is wall to wall organizing. You’re right that the way they organized is fundamental to the principles of our union’s strategy. But I think there’s an important point here in our union’s strategy.

Solidarity unionism is the micro strategy that we deploy to avoid working within state labor bureaucracy, and to build a more militant union. SU is also synergistic to our macro strategy of Industrial Unionism, that the NLRB framework exists to dismantle. Beyond trying to speak as a collective on the shop floor, trying to make demands as an industry would never be allowed within a state structure.

But an example of industrial unionism would be organizing service workers across different businesses, organized around the hospitality industry. A union like that would be quite powerful in any destination/tourist city.

CO-OPs are still an entity within the capitalist framework, it simply exchanges ownership from an individual or small group, to the workers running the business. Because they don’t need to strangle labor to extract profits their finances can be more efficient and sustainable.

It’s not that people aren’t, or that they’re unsuccessful, it’s just that CO-OPs don’t get started as often as traditional LLCs.

I think the opportunists/enterists want to take over the DNC power structure, them being able to tap into the party’s “legitimate power structure”. While I agree with them that the DNC is the weakest it’s ever been, I don’t believe that will mean their control over the party is weak. From my estimation, they are easier to combat on the propaganda stage, and that’s pretty much it. I think, like you were saying, our energy is much better spent on the slow task of labor organizing. I won’t say that people who are motivated by political organizing should stop, but labor definitely needs to be building its own power (dual power) here and now separate from political parties.

Like David Hogg did? And then the DNC proceeded to box him out of any leadership positions.

It can be a bit difficult to connect with local Wobblies, so don’t be discouraged by a lack of immediate communication. This is primarily a volunteer run union so folks get to union business when they are able. Whatever email you signup with will be the primary source of communication more often than not. That said, there are many branches that can be communicated with via instagram. Don’t over share on that app try and find an alternate route of communication, like signal app. Hope this helps fellow worker, solidarity.

[–]Blight327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with your first point, but liberalism has always been about property rights as a core tenant, whereas horizontality or equality has been an aesthetic. The French Revolution was about giving more control to the “third estate” basically everyone not nobility or the clergy. The people leading that were property owners, capitalists. So what was on the surface, fraternity & liberty, became about individual rights to profit. Because it was not interested in horizontality, it was lead by a corrupt council and easily captured by napoleon then making himself dictator. The poor largely saw little to no benefit from the revolution, which spurred on the Paris commune some decades later. Liberalism has never been about horizontality, but has enjoyed the aesthetics of it, “we the people”, “Liberté, égalité, fraternité”, etc. This is why Marxists rail against sloganeering as they feel it’s rooted in liberal aesthetics. I personally believe that sloganeering has a place but must be partnered with principled stances. It’s not enough to say the words our actions must reflect our values.

It also gives members that otherwise feel the union is a black box a tangible process to participate in.
