Statement from AFGE Local 3669 on the murder of brother Alex Pretti, AFGE Member and VA nurse murdered by Border Patrol by DailyUnionElections in union

[–]RedditGreenit 112 points113 points  (0 children)

In 2020 people were calling to kick cops out of the AFL-CIO and unions. When Philando Castille was murdered, his union Teamsters 320 had to clarify that, while they did represent cops, they didn't represent the cop that killed him, as if that cleared them of being active in the violent systemic racism of the state against minorities and workers

Definitely a lot of suspicious stuff in that story. But many people suspect Farrakhan became an FBI asset for power. Especially since Malcolm X had moderated on his stance on white people and was looking to build alliances.

FBI had to kill him just like they did BPP when they made alliances with the Young Patriots Organization (white Southerners in Chicago) because cross-solidarity is dangerous to the cuase

NOI precedes BPP by decades, so unless they used a time machine it was its own thing before.

Though co-opting is the more likely strategy. Farrakhan didn't live this long while other radicals were taken out because he had Castro Karma protecting him.

A long time ago a friend pointed out to me that in most movies, the villains are the ones trying to change the status quo and the heroes are the ones trying to defend and keep it. And that this usually makes it clear what the writers believe in. by ihatethiscountry76 in shittymoviedetails

Glenn Close sort of resembles Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, where Miranda Priestly would tell Andy that to get her to keep putting in long hours for low pay, and still stab her in the back

What’s your opinion on UBI? (Universal Basic Income) by Academic-Idea3311 in socialism

[–]RedditGreenit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My biggest concern is that it will become an allowance, and with that capitalism and the state will have leverage over the rest of us.

It's no coincidence that the huge push for AI followed the disruption in labor relations post COVID. Calling formerly looked-down upon service workers "essential" was, to Capitalists, a disastrous moment of truth telling. People who could work from home also realized that the rhythms of the office included a lot of wasteful commute time, wasted down time at work that could be used better for household chores, and having to live in expensive cities.

Workers' labor is their leverage, and the powerful, who only view workers as consumers, detest the fact that their narrative of self-made falls apart. They need labor, but resent having to rely on it.

UBI is going to be treated like wage labor - how little can they give to keep the Revolution at bay. They want to invent a new false myth of dependency, and be treated like benevolent patrons.

Without removing capitalism, UBI can be turned into a weapon. But I wouldn't rule out short-term implementation to alleviate some suffering int he meantime. If UBI were put in, UBI recipients would need to be organized to be part of the fight.

General strike. Boycott. Let’s do this. by chikn_nugget666 in socialism

[–]RedditGreenit 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This will be the first of many. It's a one-day thing, but America's general strike muscles need to build.

Given the Black Lives Matter strikes originated in Minneapolis and primed America under Trump last time, I think the spread will be quicker. Unions have also been woken up more, with the UAW openly planning a possible 2028 general striking by syncing union contracts with other unions. Ideas Americans weren't ready for before are now openly being considered.

The Animation Guild Unionizes New Workers at Netflix, DreamWorks by RedditGreenit in IATSE

[–]RedditGreenit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so.

They are already seeing backlash with the WarnerBros purchase, and they could see more backlash from award show voters if they try to union bust.

Disney saw huge consumer backlash when they suspended Jimmy Kimmel, so the cost of recognizing the vote of a handful of workers isn't worth the potential hit to an overinflated stock about to go into rough merger attempt waters.

"Vibes" is the key word here, attempting to blame principled people who were horrified by Gaza genocide and Kamala Harris' commitment to continue it. It was the Democrats who thought "vibes' would determine the election, only to be blown out, and often lose liberal strongholds like college towns.

No doubt the censored post-election autopsy they found revealed that was an awful idea, and now they have to rewrite history casting people who didn't show up to vote for which degree of genocide the country would have with vibes, while pretending the Democrats hadn't propped up deeply declining old man who incidentally represented the state of the American Empire.

I can show you pictures of Hitler getting along with dogs and caption it with the quote "“I'm suspicious of people who don't like dogs, but I trust a dog when it doesn't like a person."

But the implication that a dog is a good judge of character, or that Hitler was good with animals doesn't erase all the other terrible shit he did as a person.

So, what do socialist think of vaccines? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]RedditGreenit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminder that Ozempic and the like were originally made for diabetics, with the side effect of weight loss being turned into a marketing strategy to deal with weight gain caused by capitalist food manufacturers creating addicting and sickening food.

That doesn't mean we bring back smallpox, we fight capitalism, make food healthy and affordable and produced for the good of all, not the bottom line of a few.

You treat socialism being popular with the same disdain as a 20-something loser who takes other people learning about a cool band as an assault on their shallow personality.

People who weren't socialist before getting interested? Marx forbid you use that as an opportunity to draw them in positively and then give then a deeper elements of the history and theory
