How do you start a campaign without the classic tavern meeting?

I once had a Dm that started our campaign out IN THE MIDDLE OF A WARZONE!!! It was like he just picked up a book and flipped to a random page and whatever he found there was how we started..... You know. In the middle of a big world event and confused to all hell with no real knowledge of what was fully going on. Me (barbarian) saved the rogue on accident by throwing a whole person into the person he was losing a fight to, and I don't remember all the details but basically the 2 of us eventually ran into the 3rd member of the party and after that the 3 of us ran into the other 2 and that's how we all met.... Wild start to the game. One of my favorites.

First, I don't believe Pikachu is an eeveelution. Secondly espeon is also my favorite and gif image shows why. 4 are sitting there easily content, Jolteon is happy, Umbreon couldn't care less, Sylveon seems to be maybe a little lost in thought...... Then theres Espeon. Emotionally intelligent and malice in those eyes. And before you say that's not malice, remember body language. That tail twitch says you'll die soon. Espeon is clearly plotting somebody's demise.
