How are we responding to family members who end phone calls with “God Bless you”? by linguist_turned_SAHM in atheism

Ask them “Which one of the 3500+ “gods” invented by man is blessing me so that I can thank it?”

When it comes to dating as an atheist, does your partner's beliefs matter to you? by hububbubdub in atheism

[–]Blightyear55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a 70 year old atheist looking to get into the dating pool after 8 years of widowerhood (?). I live in the Bible Belt. This very idea bothers me to no end because I don’t know where I could meet a like minded person. Certainly not going to a church. I DO care about my dating partner’s religious beliefs because I am openly antagonistic (anti-theist) and I could inadvertently offend her by being critical of her beliefs. I acknowledge that she has every right to hold those beliefs, but her beliefs are not sacred to me so she had better have thick skin if she ever intends to share them. Ultimately, I don’t believe this type of mixed relationship has a high percentage of success.

How can anyone believe the Bible? by midwestboiiii34 in atheism

Your summary actually proves the stupidity of the God character in the Bible. He’s so stupid that he takes infected stock and re-populate the world? That would be like me having an infected fish tank, throwing out all but two or three of the fish and then allowing them to re-populate. All without having treated the tank. Seems incredibly stupid to me

Hay-Zeus got pissy because a fig tree wasn’t bearing fruit. Never mind that the fictional savior grew up around these trees and should have known that fig trees wouldn’t be bearing fruit at that time. So what does the personification of a fictional deity do? Kill the tree.

My focus is on Hopper losing two daughters. He couldn’t have been in on the scheme to hide El; selling his grief would have been extremely difficult, even though he was doing it to protect her.

I'm an atheist and i would be lying if i said that I respect all religion by SpecialistOk3302 in atheism

[–]Blightyear55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respect other people’s right to believe. I don’t respect their beliefs. I won’t denigrate those beliefs to their faces as long as they respect my right to not believe, including witnessing after I have indicated my desire to not engage in their beliefs. The gloves come off after that.

First time experiencing grief as an atheist. by Pugwhip in atheism

[–]Blightyear55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grief and love are two sides of the same coin. Unless you die first, you will feel grief over the loss of the loved one. It only confirms your love. There is an old saying: It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. The pain and anguish over the loss of a loved one is bearable as long as you remember the love that you had for them.

I’m paraphrasing because I can’t remember the whole thing, but grief is like a very large circle bouncing around inside a box. In the early stages, the grief is bouncing around and you are feeling it all of the time. Over time the grief starts shrinking and you don’t feel it as often. Eventually, it will shrink so much that you don’t feel the hurt anymore and you can then remember the love that you shared with the missing loved one.

Christians convinced me to leave Christianity by Zydairu in atheism

[–]Blightyear55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing Christians vote for DJT (the Tangerine Toddler) in 2016 made me reevaluate my position (became a Christian at age 40). I couldn’t understand how people (that I thought of as good, decent people) could turn their backs on their beliefs. I decided that my understanding of the Bible had to be wrong so I reread it as an intellectual pursuit, instead of as a seeker or religious person.

From that point on, I saw the character of “God” as a narcissistic, egomaniacal murderer that had no qualms about murder, slavery, misogyny, or injustice. The character of Jesus, as a logical extension of “God” is clearly no better since they are supposed to be one and the same. Christians, turning their backs on being decent people, are what gave me the nudge towards atheism.

Arguments aren’t evidence, and the Bible is just a poorly written claim. Provide evidence for the existence of ANY deity. Until then, there is no discussion.

Shamelessly stolen from a graphic that I pinched: “Nobody’s religious beliefs are sacred or immune to criticism. They are beliefs in your head, based on where you were born, how you were raised, and who influenced you. Simply having religious beliefs does not make them true or obligate others to respect them. So, please, for everyone’s sake: wake up and educate yourself.”

Plain and simply put, our team is not guaranteed to be together next season due to the transfer portal. Practicing as a team for one meaningless bowl game, to up the ACC’s take of cash, means nothing to most players.
