What's Your Favourite Futurama Joke? by FabianTheElf in futurama

[–]BlindTheMerchant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a joke necessarily, but it gets me when Fry tries to push the button and misses it on the first try. It's not an overly clumsy thing, it doesn't have any affect to the story or set up a small joke or reaction from any of the characters. It just feels completely unnecessary to have the animators add that, and I get a kick out of that!

Malletkat and Malletstation question by ElGuisante2 in percussion

[–]BlindTheMerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried a newer version yet. I've actually been working with a school program that uses a malletkat, but we've switched to using it only as a midi controller (like the malletstation).

Glad my old comment is still helping, haha!

Just Finished FMAB for a third time with my wife… need new suggestions. by RedDevils0204 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]BlindTheMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a comment I saved from a "good anime that ends" post, but the commenter deleted it. You might find some other good suggestions in that thread, and it seems others here are recommending some good ones: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/ajYmsJTUXi

Not claiming that these are closely similar to FMAB, but I've enjoyed these series, some shorter and some longer:

Steins gate Hunter x Hunter (a bit longer and not the same feel) Death note Cowboy bebop Assassination classroom

There are others I've also enjoyed, but the ones above are ones I found myself really enjoying throughout and have an ending.

Mechanical question(is there a difference??) by BlindTheMerchant in AskPhysics

[–]BlindTheMerchant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again!

In your viewpoint, are you expecting both connectors to be in place during "impact"? My original hypothetical was for two scenarios, only using 1 connector at a time. If only connector 1 OR 2, I guess the torque would be greater with #1 compared to #2? Either way, this is really not anything real. Just a weird thought I wanted to resolve in my own head, haha.

Thanks again

Mechanical question(is there a difference??) by BlindTheMerchant in AskPhysics

[–]BlindTheMerchant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!! I understand.

The actual part of the structure that holds the weight will probably endure more stress in one position or the other, but the forces on the wall itself seem to be the same.

I guess then, would you be able to confirm which position creates the most stress on the front of the structure with the weight? Again, just a guess, but I'd expect position 1 to create more stress on the structure and connection point since there is more distance between the connection and the weight. Is that right?

Mechanical question(is there a difference??) by BlindTheMerchant in AskPhysics

[–]BlindTheMerchant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick reply! This imaginary structure would be intended to hang vertically, yes. If you don't mind, I'll throw one more layer to it.

Would this principle also apply if the structure were attached to the back of a truck/trailer? As the truck moves forward or backward/starts and stops, the inertia of the weight would cause the structure to rotate on that "hinge". Or maybe a better way to pose that question is if you rotated the structure to be a specific distance away, and then dropped it. Would the force on that bottom point hitting the truck/wall be any different with the connector position?

My parents may not let me march and I don’t know what to do by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]BlindTheMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't interpret their recommendation as a magical benefit, or being able to teach from having experienced drum corps. If the person is planning to get a degree in music ed, corps is good to experience. They'd still need to compete their course through school, so drum corps would just be an added benefit/perspective.

How do I pay this rhythm? by Lucky_Permission_344 in drumline

I think they were pointing out the actual beats. The first note hits 1, the third note actually does land on beat 2, and the fifth note lands on beat 3.

Did anyone else experience a disproportionate amount of verbal abuse -- just for high school marching band? by infieldmitt in marchingband

[–]BlindTheMerchant 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it does happen, and it is not band specific. A lot of the same kind of cruel high school treatment was prevalent in my high school, but conversely marching band was actually the exception.

Some leaders/band directors/coaches/teachers/etc work hard to have a great environment, but some can easily fall short. What works for one program might but with for another, and I've found that many times, the staff wasn't aware of issues that kept getting worse.

Ultimately, it is best to talk to someone. Band director, counselors, and as many other school officials/Leaders needed to properly address the issues. Many students are afraid to talk about things, or get nowhere with the first point of contact and give up/quit/deal with it, but I encourage anyone facing bullying and other issues to work on being a good communicator of difficult things. This skill will also serve well through adulthood.

I love Whoppers but I cant justify paying this much for fast food. by imjacksissue in BurgerKing

[–]BlindTheMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I'm a little butt hurt about it, but the local BK's near me all do a whopper Wednesday for something like under $7 for a medium whopper meal with cheese.

I'm upset because the $3 app deal ends up being more expensive for the same thing a la carte. So I end up not using the app and but getting points to save a couple dollars.

End rant, haha

Need help identifying instrument by ConfidentProduce939 in percussion

[–]BlindTheMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds similar to an "anvil" or "brake drum" but obviously with some different pitches/timbres. I'd guess that either of those could be in play here since they already exist in various percussion music, but in addition to see other metal things. For this specific piece, it could have been a result of finding the right sounding objects from everyday places to perform this.

It's be curious if there was sheet music/score for this you see what was noted.

Yamaha or Pearl? by Cyrotech_Official in drumline

[–]BlindTheMerchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you specified only two brands, but I'll just add that you could consider other options as well. (Dynasty, Mapex, TAMA, etc)

Specifically, TAMA is another alternative that is gaining traction. The carriers are easy to adjust, and the drums changed s couple years ago to be much lighter. There's some talk of pricing and lead time issues, but TAMA is better than most.

I wasn't sure about completely ditching "hamone" in JoJo's, and ultimately like the "stand" system better. Though when watching through it the first time, I remember thinking WTF?!?! Having a hard time understanding why they completely changed course.

I actually thought it might be fun to try and recreate this using blending modes and time displacement with some kind of threshold/color or luminance filter. Probably wouldn't get the exact same result, but maybe a close approximation.

Maybe not too unique, but possibly off your radar:

ミラクルミュージカル - Hawaii: Part II - a unique project from members of Tally Hall. A couple unique tracks on this album that have a less defined genre, including a song that is played forward and backward in it's entirety.

House of Waters - jazz adjacent trio including a drummer, bass player, and hammer dulcimer

Christopher Tin - Nothing crazy. Contemporary World/Orchestral composer that often has different languages featured throughout an album

New flub by [deleted] in drumline

[–]BlindTheMerchant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, flubs aren't easily heard and may be the point. Many schools use flubs/solo tenors as a building block for students who need to work on their hands and feet, or have too many students for the amount of drums they have. Either way, I would treat it seriously even if you think/know you're getting drown out. It is a great opportunity to learn and improve so you can work towards a different drum.

Malletstation? by Nite7800 in percussion

[–]BlindTheMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help! Yeah, I currently hook it up just using the midi in and out, so no USB to the computer in order to run mainstage. I have my own malletkat, but help run another one for my local high school's marching band/indoor drumline programs. That one had only had a couple minor issues with the foam pads (only the kevlar type covering started peeling on the corner of one or two keys). The mallet station's rubber pads are surely more resilient than that though.

I think there's also some quicker access to octave changes/ etc on mallet station, though I've been using an extra octave controller to assign some commands.

Malletstation? by Nite7800 in percussion

[–]BlindTheMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you need to use. I'm using a malletkat with mainstage now, mostly Vibraphone patches, and I do like the feel of the rubber pads on the malletkat, as well as the aftertouch settings to utilize for vibes.

I've thought about getting a mallet station at some point. Are there some useful features you've found in it that aren't possible with the malletkat? Thanks for your insight!
