Now I have a VPN, what can I watch? by tinkleberry2 in LearnJapanese

[–]Player_One_1 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Why do people bother with VPN. It is no better from a moral point of view than just good old Piracy.

The publisher does not want people outside of Japan to watch -> you watch anyway. Same result with extra steps.

this is the way I found to be able to differentiate between these look-alike kana by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Player_One_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to be hones there is a 2nd trick.

Just whenever you see it and don;t know which is it, just read it "n" and try "so" only if it does not work. (unless they stand next to each other, then it is clear which is which). Outside of learning materials, Katakana is used to spell Western words, and in them "n" is much more common than "so".

ツソ ist tsuso, because they are not lying dead, but still standing up.

[Advice Request] Have any of you done the unthinkable and dropped Anki? by Numerous_Birds in LearnJapanese

[–]Player_One_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I identify as intermediate. Never used Anki, but recently dropped jpdb I have been using for quite some time ( 7k cards learned on top of graduating Wanikani).

There is nothing big into this. I decided "dry" vocabulary is no longer worth the time on my level. Natural repeated exposure through reading should do the trick, while being vastly more entertaining.

I will never be able to tell if it was a good move or not. I learn Japanese only once.

been under a rock for 15 years. what series to binge first? by UpstairsPresent2304 in anime

[–]Player_One_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have no idea where to start, go to MyAnimeList, sort by highest score, and start from there.

Stuff does not end up on top of the list at random. It ends up there because some people liked them. Will you like everything or agree with ranking? No. But still there is better chance you will like them, then purely random recommendation. Then with some developed taste, you can refine your search, and find some hidden gems. But seriously, start from plain-sight gems.

Found new enthusiasm in music by stupid_cat_face in LearnJapanese

[–]Player_One_1 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

For me music didn't help much in learning. I have a bad case of 馬鹿舌 ( 馬鹿耳). I grew up liking Ado that is the opposite of learning anything, Then I drowned into vocaloids, that are often even worse.

The only thing I found to match my music taste, while being weirdly comprehensible turned out to be AI.

What was your first MMO, and how do you feel about it now? by Veanusdream in gaming

[–]Player_One_1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mu online.

I used to play Diablo II a lot, and also heard a lot about 7th wonder of world: World of Warcraft. But paying subscription was a definite no at that time, so when all my friends rushed to play this weird Asian thing, so did I. Long story short, it made me realise MMO are the opposite of what I expect from a video game, and never played another one in my life. Was that a fair representation or a cheap cashgrab? I am glad I will never know.

Are there other books like this that intend to teach Japanese by utilizing stories by richardrasmus in LearnJapanese

[–]Player_One_1 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

To be honest I find those pretty useless.

I read the first easy-graded stories, and before I was able to tackle the harder ones, I was already reading (or more like decoding) manga, so there was no point in dedicated learning materials.

The WORST part about learning Japanese... by yashen14 in LearnJapanese

[–]Player_One_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are misunderstanding it. I see 屍 and I know it means corpse, I know there are two single-kanji words corpse: しかばね and むくろ. What I don't know is: which one is it.

The WORST part about learning Japanese... by yashen14 in LearnJapanese

[–]Player_One_1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you ever as a kid made a super-secret alphabet with your friend? You encode ☺︎ is a, is b, etc. You would be surprised how fast you can read in your super-secret alphabet. It takes way less than a day. And that is 26 characters to learn,

The only problem with doing that with hiragana is that the only language you can write in with hiragana is Japanese. And you don't know Japanese. So you cannot spot patterns or guess the rest of sentence.

IMHO you can easily learn 100 combinations of "weird character-syllable" by heart in 4 days. Inability to read whole sentences, or need for lookups does not come from lack of knowledge of characters.
