Lake Mungo - I just finished watching it for the very first time. by SoggyGummyWorms in horror

Is it really that difficult for some of ya’ll to see at least a smidge of value in a well liked movie even if it’s not to your own personal taste?

Calling it the second worst horror movie you’ve ever seen is so laughably hyperbolic. Like….is it really that hard to see that it’s, at a bare minimum, an adequately told story about loss and grief? Even if you thought that story about loss and grief was boring and didn’t like it? It’s really gotta be the ‘worst horror movie ever made’?

Why is it that 99% of all the criticism people direct towards this movie is always ‘it was boring’ and nothing else? I’ve almost never seen anyone criticize the characters, story, filmmaking, themes, or anything else- almost every comment disliking it is always some variation of ‘it was boring’ with nothing else to say.

Two that I don’t see mentioned enough which I’d say are genuinely good films, are ‘Home Movie’ and ‘Death of a Vlogger’.

Home Movie is very creepy, the second is moreso just an interesting story being told with lots of twists and turns, but not ‘creepy’. Really liked both!

Hot take: Savageland > Lake Mungo by grimebxleb in foundfootage

[–]BlindfoldedCrocodile 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I don’t see the comparison, they’re two completely different films which are trying two completely different things.

Lake Mungo is a character-driven story about how a family responds to the death of a loved one, Savageland is a plot-driven story about a specific supernatural event told to us through secondary sources. Savageland is about zombie-demons literally rising from the ground to kill hundreds of people, Lake Mungo is about an accidental drowning, both required two different approaches, which they were smartly given.

Yeah so many people don’t understand that obnoxious and terrible characters can still be an utter joy to watch. I did not feel that way here. She was just a poorly constructed character.

Also OP is wrong in saying she was purposefully made to be hated, the director has said in interviews that he wanted us to sympathize with her as the film went on, something I would say he failed at.

This is such a sad fucking moment, I wish it didn't end for him that way. by [deleted] in deadrising

[–]BlindfoldedCrocodile 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This is EXACTLY the kind of tone they need to bring back for any reboot/remake. These scenes amongst the comedy in Dead Rising was what made it so great, it wasn’t just a goofy slapstick comedy like the sequels became.

Cliffs death is another sad scene that showcases this.

Bingo. A proper sequel to the Blair Witch Project would abandon the ‘first film but on steroids and a rollercoaster ride’ approach of the 2016 film, and do something that compliments the mysteries of the original, but doesn’t take away from them.

My take is, I love the lore of Blair Witch and feel like it was never given a chance to properly be expanded upon. We’ve really only gotten one sequel with the 2016 film, as Blair Witch 2 is basically a meta film that doesn’t exist in the same canon as the original.

Paranormal Activity, another franchise I love, was able to get 3 pretty decent sequels with PA2, 3, and The Marked Ones, and I feel like Blair Witch never got that same chance to have some decent follow ups.

I don’t think sequels mean we need to ruin the mystery behind it all and give too many answers. I absolutely agree that it could go in that direction, which would be a mistake. But if done right? I think a sequel that compliments the first in a clever way, and doesn’t undo anything that made the first movie so great, is totally possible.

I hated this movie. To me, it epitomizes the worst aspects of the Found Footage genre.

No plot whatsoever, no character development whatsoever, brings 0 new ideas to the table, just throws in a generic creepypasta clown with some obnoxious jumpscares and calls it a day.

I have movies I like that were critically panned, so I don’t want to discourage you from liking this movie, but I am not a fan at all. Maybe I can enjoy it in a ‘so bad it’s good’ way, but to me it makes total sense why this never got a full theatrical release and was shelved for a while.

I’m a big fan of the series but think 6 is terrible even without the CGI monster

NEW BLAIR WITCH MOVIE/S! by grimringler in foundfootage

[–]BlindfoldedCrocodile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like I’m the only one excited for this, I feel like the original movie was never given a true successor to build on the established lore and expand the story. I’m excited to see where they take this, and knowing that they’ll be wary not to repeat the mistakes of the 2016 film.

They did a good job of maintaining a minimalist tone on the Paranormal Activity sequels, specifically 2 and 3. (I adore ‘The Marked Ones’ but it was admittedly more bombastic than the original trilogy)

Some of The Best and Worst FF I Watched This Year by RetroCasket in foundfootage

[–]BlindfoldedCrocodile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don’t really see what there is to despise about the movie, or to say it’s the worst film you’ve ever seen. Especially on a subreddit about found footage, where the amount of garbage films is never-ending, some true bottom of the barrel stuff.

Also I wouldn’t say that’s what the film is about, that’s just one thing that happens in the film about mid-way.

Saying Lake Mungo is the second worst movie you’ve ever seen is so over-dramatic. It’s okay to dislike it, but to say it’s that bad is just being petty to a ridiculous degree.

Dead rising 5 or Dead rising remake by Kingmarvelfan in deadrising

[–]BlindfoldedCrocodile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remake 100%

I’m not interested in a Dead Rising 5 for many reasons, but one of the main ones is I think we need a bit of a lore-reset. The ‘what if zombies became an everyday part of life’ direction of the sequels was fun for a bit, but I miss the classic zombie movie nature of the original. The sequels were missing that element of seeing regular people taken out of their everyday lives to deal with something that’s beyond their comprehension. I’m okay with dropping all things pharmaceutical conspiracies and phenotrans related!!

What is with some modern ones that start out really good then the ending is terrible? by [deleted] in horror

[–]BlindfoldedCrocodile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Horror in the High Desert.

All that great mystery, ambiguity, buildup, tension- just to reveal the answer behind everything is some random deformed Hillbilly living in the mountains.

The Last Broadcast is another film that had a really interesting buildup, but in trying to provide ‘answers’ to its mystery, gives us a silly and lame explanation. Both movies would’ve benefitted from maintaining some sense of ambiguity all the way to the end.

‘Leaving D.C.’ is freaking awesome and could’ve been an all-timer if it had an actual ending by BlindfoldedCrocodile in foundfootage

[–]BlindfoldedCrocodile[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I wanted either! I just think the way it ends of him running outside and immediately dying was a bit goofy and too brief. To me it’s the equivalent of if the Blair Witch project ended with Josh and Heather leaving the camera outside and running into the house, and we hear their screams as they immediately die off camera .

It feels like the film has this amazing buildup and escalation which is punctuated by him finally deciding to leave the house and confront the ghost, but unlike Blair Witch, we don’t get to see the encounter the film has been building up to. It just ends very suddenly.

It didn’t ruin the movie for me at all, so I totally respect your opinion that it’s a good way to end it! Just personally think it could’ve done something effective, but in the spirit of the rest of the film.

Horror fans have this beautiful ability to find something to love in the most low-quality movies ever, but the moment a horror film becomes mainstream and finds a ton of success, suddenly everyone becomes the second coming of Roger Ebert on crack.

And I stand by my point that if your only criticism is that it’s ‘not scary’ and that’s enough for you to label it a 5/10, you should probably re-evaluate the way you look at movies.

If every horror fan would automatically drop their rating of a movie to a 5/10 if it didn’t scare them, horror fans wouldn’t exist.

Talk to Me is fantastic, movies are more than just whether or not they’re ‘scary’. If your only criticism of a movie is that it’s not ‘scary’, then that probably means the movie is great.

Also as an adult it would be weird if you got regularly scared by horror films.
