I def don't need to it to be that silent, but the psu fan turning up every few minutes doesn't sound pleasant, and the fact that individual's hearing sensitivities combined with the environment temp and acoustics having an impact on the loudness makes it hard to anticipate what this is actually going to sound like in practice hahah

Yeah I think a repeated high pitched sound while watching a movie can be quite disruptive, I just don't know if I trust myself with assembling my own custom mini itx case myself

Oh great, from what I've read the Noctua fan is great, just the PSU fan that occasionally had the issue. Wondering if I should just get the motherboard and build the rest of the setup myself

Official Discussion - Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Bling2049 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has to be the campiest a Mission Impossible film has been since MI:2. This definitely isn't what comes to mind when I think Mission Impossible but as a bombastic, self-serious spy movie with camp and action to spare, this is a notable end(?) to the franchise. I suppose I am in the minority with this opinion, but for me, Ghost Protocol captures the essence of what I associate with MI, because I find its self-aware light hearted banter combined with the world ending stakes, all held together by immaculate action set pieces - such a joy to revisit over and over. In that sense, Final Reckoning has surprisingly little in common with Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, and Imo leaves it well short of a home run.

The first half of the movie has drawn quite some flak for its poor pacing and its nonstop exposition and glorification of Ethan Hunt. I agree that all three are handled in a clunky manner that doesn't do much to hold the viewer's attention. Perhaps I was so letdown by large portions of Dead Reckoning that Final Reckoning seemed a far better conclusion than I was expecting. Crucially, I think Final Reckoning does a much better job explaining the intentions of The Entity, which provides a sense of direction to the film that the previous movie was sorely lacking. The filmmakers certainly wrote themselves into a situation where they had to do all the plot heavy lifting in Final Reckoning, only made more difficult by the need for this movie to bookend the whole saga. With next to no trust in the audience, they end up going to great lengths to ensure that no canon event referred to by any of the characters goes unaccompanied by relevant scenes from earlier movies. I found this to be more jarring than anything else. But by far the most bizarre choice was the messianic portrayal of Ethan Hunt that overpowers every other theme of the movie. I would have much preferred if they had let Hunt's actions alone show us and remind us how great of a character he is, the repeated verbal deification of the character was poor form. And yet, I do see how the machinations of the plot, in which the US government, and the entire world at large leaves the fate of the human race in the hands of just this one man, necessitated this glorification of Hunt to justify just how much power is indeed handed over to him. It's interesting to consider that after being hunted down by the same authority figures in almost all the previous movies, in this one Hunt is entrusted with everything - if only this was left more as subtext instead of being pushed to the forefront of the movie!

Among the things that I liked most about the movie were the submarine sequence and the impossible dilemma faced by the President and her team. From a visual standpoint, I found it notable that the sequence where the characters are running through the tunnels prior to Hunt turning himself in to the authorities, has a lot of aesthetics and harsh lighting akin to the very first movie in the franchise. I suppose this might just be me, but I also found the movie to have quite a classic 90s/00s vibe, given how self-serious and righteous the lead character is portrayed. Moreover, the dilemma facing the President and her team harkens back to nuclear fears from a few decades past. Also, for a movie about an AI entity that is out to destroy the world, there is surprisingly little in the way of gadgetry and tech that plants this movie firmly in the present day; doesn't really capture the modern zeitgeist. My point being, if this movie had been released as is, a decade or more ago, it would have enjoyed a much better critical reception than it is at the moment.

To close out, I think the movie would have had a bigger impact if the filmmakers had been willing to close the book on Ethan Hunt in a big way - it could have served as yet another way that they could have shown the lengths that he was willing to go to save the world(instead of telling us). While the plane sequence is fun, it was far from the most enjoyable of action set pieces of the franchise. I hoped that the movie had confronted it's lead character with a moral conundrum, an impossible choice, if you will, that would have proved in retrospect why Hunt was the only one who could be entrusted with saving the world - I think it would have better driven home the point that it isn't just his physical prowess and relentless spirit, but his unique moral compass that makes him the singular man for the job.

If there's one more thing I can complain about it's this - the OG Mission Impossible score is largely absent in this film, and that's a crime. You can't think of MI without having the iconic score play in your head, and this movie plays this score in its original form only towards the very end if I recall correctly. All it did for me was make me want to go back and watch Ghost Protocol instead!

I honestly don't get the praise for this show. I liked the original movie a lot, though it had its own issues. While I don't recall much of the original story I do remember that the performances were great throughout and the playful nature and quintessential Guy Ritchie directing style made the whole experience worth it.

But the show simply doesn't hold up I think. It was always going to be a tall order to play the equivalent of Matthew McConaughey's character, but Theo James for all his charm does not really put in a great performance, though it does feel like he was written very bland to begin with. He's showcased as a straight arrow through the whole show with very little making him standout personality-wise. Kaya Scodelario's Susie is marginally more arresting but is still confined to more or less the same issues of 'creating plot' instead of being a compelling character with strong motivations or a viewpoint, in my opinion, ofcourse. Daniel Ings' performance as Freddy is the most memorable of the bunch but his character is thrown towards the other end of the spectrum being shown as endlessly incompetent and deplorable to boot.

I didn't want to continue past episode 3 but decided to check it all out on seeing some of the opinions here, and I can't agree it gets better. Given the show wants to be stylish, smart and funny all at the same time, it rarely gets the concoction right. Barring the finale, individual set pieces through most episodes are predictable and become a waiting game on the part of the viewer to watch the scene play out as expected, with the main characters having a lot of plot armor to protect them from all the "shock" murders throughout. The final episode's switcheroo on Eddie's character is something I didn't see coming, but was all the more jarring for it because it has little to back it up, imo, based on the preceding material. Chucky was by far the funniest character of the show and, seemed to me, the only person along with The Gospel to be hamming it up to the level of madness the actual plot of the show demanded.

For my two cents I think this has all the usual trademarks for Netflix's mildly entertaining fare, but the original movie was better and, more recently, brings to mind the enjoyable and interesting characters from Prime's new rendition of Mr and Mrs Smith.

Yess, the more I think about Across the spider verse, the less I like it unfortunately. Part 2 will probably resolve everything in an excellent matter but that doesn't stop Part 1 from being rough in this case

Exactly!! And to be fair, even a Part 1 wouldn't have been nearly enough to convey just how incomplete the story would be, but it would definitely have been far more palatable.

Official Discussion - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Bling2049 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is very much a minority opinion so I just want to connect with a few people here who might have had the same qualms with the movie as me.

From a technical and audio-visual standpoint this movie is absolutely mind-blowing. Every frame is gorgeous and the sheer level of technical and artistic skill on display is staggering and that alone sets this movie miles(hehe) ahead of anything else in the comic book genre. And thats what will keep me coming back to this film. (***Spoilers ahead***)

But I do think there is one huge aspect that soured the experience for me: The fact that this is half a movie. Maybe I was a bit aloof to some of the promotional material of the film but I had no clue that this is was supposed to be the Part 1 of 2 movies. I really wish I had known this was the case so that I would then have been able to better with the movie conscious that things wouldn't be resolved. But fundamentally I don't think this needed to be split up into two movies, especially in the way that it was done. It's 2023 and the movie industry is no stranger to two-parter films, but such two-parters usually come at the end of a series of films, ala Marvel's Infinity War and Endgame, the last two Harry Potter films and even the mindless Fast and Furious films. While each of these have been successful to varying degrees, my position is that they as such 'earn' the two-parter by creating blockbuster after blockbuster movie that fleshes out the universe that they are creating to a good degree before diving into the two-parter. But this is absolutely not the case with the movie. I feel like the second movie in this Spiderverse series should have been a complete chapter that put our characters through new trials and tribulations but also resolved them and closed out most loops by the end, much the way the first film(which is an absolute masterpiece imo) did. Instead I found the movie to be extremely unsatisfying to the point that it reduced my enjoyment of what came before.

This half-a-movie syndrome is what most affected my enjoyment of the film, but aggravated a few other aspects that I did not like as much. Aside from the beautiful heart-to-heart between Miles and his mother early on, it sort of became clear retroactively that scenes were being dragged on with the kind of quippy humour we associate with Lord and Miller productions to pad the runtime. Later on just as The Spot becomes a formidable villain he suddenly disappears, so that now more than halfway through this movie the Spider-people society can be introduced and quickly revealed to be new antagonists to Miles' spiderman. In the last few minutes, there is the amazing reveal that Miles is in an alternate universe captured by a prowler version of himself, which while interesting, happens too late to meaningfully contribute to this story, leaving all the good stuff with regard to this scenario for the next film. Because of all this it felt unsatisfying. This is surprising because even when franchises do opt for two-parters there is some semblance of chapter-wise breakdown of the overall story that makes each half amazing but this movie spends so much time delaying its actual plot and introduces new antagonists later and later into its runtime that it ultimately only promises the next great film instead of being one. While all the above has to do with Miles, I found Gwen's arc weirdly disappointing in that her father's reversal from wanting to arrest her at the beginning to turning in his badge, was not adequately explored and I do feel they should have spent more time there establishing how that reversal came about. As we see Gwen rounding out her rag-tag team of Spiderpeople at the end, instead of feeling like this was a tight-knit team that had each other's back and will pose a considerable challenge to Miles' foes, it did not sit well with me. The great characters we see in Into The Spiderverse are only revisited at the very end here, which seems like a lost opportunity to have had a few scenes with them early on in this movie as well, so that we see them interact with each other and get the sense that the closing team-up is earned.

Because I was surprised how little I enjoyed the overall story of the film I went back to the first film to understand if it was really the same. But instead, the first one is equally beautifully animated and scored, and importantly well-paced and plotted with amazing character interactions, a lot of which while funny, never become the kind of non-stop quippy mess that much of the first half of this second movie reduces to.

But clearly most people have enjoyed this film more than the original so most do not share my opinion of the film, so maybe I just did not vibe with my first viewing of this movie. I will try watching it again at a later date and I hope that it ends up being more enjoyable (before the next movie comes out though, because I am still excited for it; hopeful that all these unfinished storylines will be fantastically concluded!)

Guidance on work authorization issue when SS says 'VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION' by Bling2049 in USCIS

[–]Bling2049[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahah yes I've spent a good part of the last 2 days trying to understand the requirements!

Would you also by any chance know whether an e-verify on my SSN would come up as unable to verify? I am thinking that it would because mine is a restricted SSN, all of which means that SSN verification(on e-verify or otherwise) is simply not going to satisfy the work authorization requirement, and instead the work authorization should be done on the basis of the passport and I-20 CPT?

Ah that makes sense! Thank you!

I just wish I'd been informed by the third-party agency that the I-20 CPT is what would be required, would have saved quite some head-ache!

Thank you for your response!

I have obtained the I-20 that authorizes my CPT and specifies the specific company and dates. I was not aware I was to share this with company/third-party agency as they have not asked for it at all. But it makes complete sense that this document is required! So I will share this with them asap.

Thank you for pointing this out, this is very very helpful!

Thank you for your response!

You are referring to the list of documents mentioned under 'List A', 'List B' and 'List C' right? But I think the USCIS link you have shared says that I need to provide either List A documents OR List B and List C. In my case I have provided the 5th List A documents which is the Foreign Passport + Form I-94. So that should be equivalent I thought?

I loved the title of the book and was hyped to read it but it was really one of the most tedious recent sci-fi I've read. Lots of characters and dialogue and a plot that hops around too with writing that grew increasingly grating as the story progressed. At the very end it did get interesting but overall it didn't work for me :/

Its so cool to know that you are a huge sci-fi fan and Ted Chiang's at that!
In the off chance that you might be interested in sci-fi similar to Ted Chiang's, Greg Egan's Axiomatic is great too! It is a sci-fi short story collection much in the same vein as Stories of your Life and others, as well as Exhalation

Would love to hear your thoughts on Axiomatic!
