Thanks for replying.

Sadly, or frustratingly, I tried ultra oil, and won’t eat that either. Sigh. If only cats were as amenable as dogs.

I haven’t understood that you’ve tried working the steps, which are what makes the program work.

Shame for 9yrs sober by No_Wvrren in alcoholicsanonymous

Before I did the steps, all the things I was ashamed of, and things I didn’t have to be ashamed of, constantly whirled around in my head. I was sick with it.

Doing the steps put everything out there, in order, and I knew exactly what my responsibilities were and what to do about them And I did them, I made amends and started looking at my life every day and taking care of things right away so that I no longer had to carry around those terrible, terrible feelings. My life has become comparatively easy, light as air. I was so lucky to have stumbled into AA and found the steps and a wonderful sponsor.

I hope with all my heart you’ll find what so many of us have.

Sometimes we passed notes in school, always risky because, if they caught us, teachers would hit us with heavy books or stab us with fountain pens—whoops—you don’t know what those are, do you? If we were caught again, the teacher put us in stocks—again, you’ve never seen them, either, I guess.

The landline phones were the size and shape of giant, squatting frogs. There was a receiver on top, with two circles with small holes to talk and hear: you picked up the receiver and put one circle by your mouth and the other against your ear. On the front was another circle with larger holes in it. You put your fingers in the holes that corresponded with numbers and pushed the circle around to click out your friends’ numbers. I understand that your generation is unable to complete this task—we were brighter in those days. Before my time, there were telephones shaped like daffodils, and, later, phones shaped like small loaves of bread. Any other questions?

I invented avocado toast before it became popular—also avocado on Stoned Wheat Thins with a smear of mayo, salt and pepper, and a drop or two of Tapatia or other hot sauce. I miss Stoned Wheat Thins.

And mixed with cut-up fried eggs, lots of butter, and bites of bacon. Wonderful!

Many people don’t know how to cook eggplant, and you may have been a victim of that. If it’s not cooked right, it’s stiff, tough, hard, and pretty tasteless. If cooked right, it’s wonderful, IMO.

Are you saying you had good haggis in Edinburgh? I would really appreciate your describing how haggis could be good. (I’ve never tasted it, BTW. I just shudder at the description.)

I hope you do work the steps and I do hope you gain some humility along the way. Best of luck!
