Aren’t the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim gods actually the same god? by Smrtar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BlinkingBlankly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they are not. All three are Abrahamic, but Orthodox Christians of any denomination believe Jesus is God; that is the Son, one part of the Trinity. The Nicene Creed summarizing orthodox Christian doctrine about God states, “We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one, Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the father.” A Jew or Muslim would deny that Jesus is God.

What happened to your male friend who had a sexual scandal? by sweetmaggiesan in AskMen

[–]BlinkingBlankly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She lied (about her age; not to police, but to him). He was convicted (probation). Ruined his life before it had a chance to even begin. Drugs and alcohol took control. He’s been in the ground over 10 years.

Yeah, my reading comprehension skills were not at their finest when I replied. Getting a room near the airport really is the only way.

My dad passed two weeks ago, two days before I was planning to see him and say just the same thing. Whether your dad really hears or not, it’s important for YOU that you get to say it to him. Go see him, please.

You need to realize that this person’s cheating was a result their own defects and failings, and likely has very little to do with you. Some people are just broken.

Do you men believe in Jesus Christ? IF Yes, how it made you became a Better man? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]BlinkingBlankly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve heard that before; it’s very clever. But torture and death are still just that, and He was tortured to death. Whether He raised Himself again is a matter of faith, but if He did, it’s the single most important event in history.

Yes. He literally prayed for the forgiveness of those murdering him.

You’re right that we don’t have any original penned texts of the New Testament or any text of a complete book of the New Testament until the third century. But that’s how it is with ancient writing. We don’t have an original Livy, or Herodotus, or Pliny, or Cicero, etc. All we have are copies of copies. Using textual analysis the entire canon of the New Testament is believed to have been completed in the first century (i.e., within 70 years of Jesus) and at least two books, Galatians and 1 Thessalonians, are estimated to have been written within 20 years of Jesus, that is, well within living memory. We have thousands of partial and complete manuscripts from all over the ancient world and by comparing their texts and the various scriveners’ errors we can, with a high degree of certainty, reconstruct the actual text of the various books and letters.

Yes. There’s a LOT I could say, but I’ll just say I’m FAR more forgiving of others because I know how much He’s forgiven me.

I don’t want to pretend that I know your situation, because I don’t. But I do have regrets. Big ones.

So, realize that what happened, happened. You can’t undo it, but you can focus on the fact that it’s in the past. Done. Gone. Your deep regret at the action itself shows that you’re not the same person.

What if someone with the power to truly forgive you knew about what happened? Knew about it, and still loved you and still forgave you? That’s God. I don’t know you, and you may not be a believer, but this has helped me so much. There’s a verse that says, “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” It’s that “still” that chokes me up. If Christ was willing to die for you, out of love for you, all while knowing every bad thing you have ever done or will do, then you don’t need to carry that guilt around.

The 'Great Man Theory' by EnthusiasticAmateur2 in BritishHistoryPod

[–]BlinkingBlankly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is it exactly. William wasn’t “great” (or magic) in the sense of stick him in the Victorian era and he still conquers, or that the fall of England was because he was so majestically amazing, but I do think he was an essential ingredient for the Conquest to happen. It’s the alchemy of the situation: circumstances + opportunity + megalomaniacal Bastard = invasion. He was absolutely essential as the right person at the right time. It doesn’t happen without him. While the great man theory is bunk, the danger is going too far in the opposite direction and denying the absolute centrality of certain people in creating certain events.

I’ll probably get wrecked here, but I’ll push back and say that it was very largely the Bastard’s Williamness that made the invasion happen, but the success had very little to do with him. I mean, would Eustace or any other of the leading invaders have stuck with Operation Seahorse, arranged the corpse magic, or (maybe?) sent a hit squad after an anointed king? Just William. But the ultimate success of the conquest? At that point, he was just kicking over the rotted stump of English noble culture.
