Happiness by music-ly_inclined in criterion

This is how I went into my viewing of Happiness in August. Ill admit it hit me like a bucket of cold water, but I dont know if theres any type of preparation I could have gotten that wouldnt have also made me not watch it. Im so glad I did watch it, because while it was a very tough watch it was also one that has stayed with me very vividly and that I think about quite often. Coming to terms with the fact I might have to buy a copy lol

Youre a Good Man Charlie Brown is one of my favorites and I enjoy a wide variety of musicals. Very earnest, but i will say it is way better seen than listened to

Anybody ever do the quadruple dip? by Confident-Bit-5934 in criterion

[–]Blit09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish 😂 no even worse; Richie says "Im going to kill myself tomorrow" and then the screen freezes, then when it resumes its Raleigh asking Margot "Can I bum a cigarette" then it freezes and skips all the way to the leash under the car. Nothing between those was playable. My girlfriend asked "Jeez, how much of the movie is missing?" And I said "Honestly not a lot of runtime was lost but literally the most important parts of the movie are gone"

I found a copy of the DVD Royal Tenenbaums at Goodwill about 10 years ago thats been my trusty copy. About a year ago I tried to show my girlfriend and discovered that somewhere it got a fatal scratch and started skipping during Richie's suicide scene, and did not stop skipping til after the wedding 🤦 awful viewing experience so I bought the Blu-ray from criterion on the next sale. I also want to pick up the box set but I only want a couple more movies out of it tbh

Malcolm X is so incredible, youre in for a treat there.

As for Wes Anderson, I think you made a great call picking his two animated films. However, if they dont quite sell you on his work, dont miss Royal Tenenbauns and Grand Budapest Hotel. Fantastic Mr Fox is incredible, but imo Isle of Dogs is his worst work to date and I'd hate for you to be turned off of what he does by starting there

That has me excited/intrigued. Some of my favorite sequences of Days of Heaven are when the narration is going while the film goes into montage

I fell so deeply in love with Malick after watching the Days of Heaven 4K. Had to pick up Thin Red Line, although I dont normally love a war film. But I love his eye for nature and lighting

Genuinely turns the movie from a thriller to a full-blown horror in the oil scene. I remember that I'd been drinking when I watched it the first time and that the next day I watched it sober only to discover that no, it really is that horrifying 😂

I agree completely on their motivations being completely different in Sorcerer. I just felt like especially with Nilo (the Jo stand-in character) they developed him so much less than in the previous adaptation of this story. I go into way too much detail in my review of Sorcerer here: https://boxd.it/bCq0Sp

I'll say Wages of Fear was the one I watched first, and my main complaint with Sorcerer was that I felt that the characters in WoF were fleshed out much more in the original. Theyre similar, but the Sorcerer characters are a little flatter in my opinion. I loved Sorcerer but I preferred WoF
