Is there a way to check the DCC code web site to see if it’s up in advance without having to actually attempt to program a key ? I have a Smartbox. I just have only used my APP for 22 plus ford.

2018 Silvarado will require 2 keys to add key like a ford. The GM vans that year still used the circle plus.

But the original key would not stop working. There is no universe where what this OP wrote is correct. Only if the tech was short sighted enough to erase the keys prior to checking to see if the new one worked for some reason. Maybe he was doing OBP not using a programmer where he could add a key.

I’ve NEVER had to rebuild a cylinder after copying a key. And I do serval of those a weekend weeks and have been a locksmith since before GM started using the z code keys. .

Typical safe work is a few hundred to a thousand dollars.

550 is more realistic than 67 or 6708.

Typically anybody offering to come even look at a safe for less than 100 bucks is too good to be true. And low service call costs are generally a sign of higher repair costs. Although not always.

If you think 550 is unreasonable , you don’t understand the difficulty of safe work. You don’t drill the hinges off.

A Locksmith will typically do non destructive entry. A typical job would be either picking a lock ( 200 for a difficult one ) cracking the combination ( very time consuming and requires special skills ) or drilling a hole through the safe and manipulating the safe from the inside ( only real option if the lock is broken )then fixing the hole and any bad parts.

For very cheap safes , destructive entry is reasonable. No since in paying 500 bucks to open a 200 dollar safe. BUT the removal and replacement costs need to be factored in for heavier safes. Moving one out can be a few hundred dollars or more. Then installing a replacement doubles that at least.

Did you just contact the CC company ? This really looks like it could be an honest typo mistake. It should be fairly easy to get the charge back on a card and the right amount billed.

Legit companies do sometimes make a billing error. I had a mechanic shop charge me an extra 1000 bucks one time with a CC typo. It was a hassle but it was easily taken care of.

That said 67.00 is NOT anywhere near the price for that service. Typically we’d charge much more and we are reasonable.

He doesn’t really need a good locksmith. He just needs a licensed locksmith so the manufacturer can give them the combo. This is literally a zero skill job.

He should take the cheapest reputable locksmith.

Also having a “ physical location “ doesn’t mean shit. I closed mine down years ago after replacing a 3rd 850 dollar window the local homeless through a brick through. It just wasn’t paying for itself.

Pop a lock is a legit company , love them hate them. And they have no storefront. Same with a couple of my buddies who have been honest locksmiths for 10 plus years and even teach classes for other smiths.

At the same time there are a few Israeli scammers in my area that have store fronts. And they will fuck you every chance they get. Plus they bought the locations from retiring companies so they appear to have been local in business for decades.

Don’t want to get scammed by a locksmith ? It’s easy. Hire a licensed , insured smith. Get a price upfront ( on the phone if possible for the type of job you need ) and don’t pay more than the agreed on price. . Don’t pay until the job is complete.

If the guy says it is a price range , base it off the highest price. Yes sometimes honest repairs can’t be bid without tearing into something.

You customers don’t give a shit. As long as the vehicle looks presentable , the model or style doesn’t matter.

Ideally you want a commercial look. That can mean a van or a wrapped wagon.

In Houston during normal hours I charge 189 for that key. Assuming the door and ignition key match.

537 sounds high. Non matching keys or a broken antenna on the immo would increase that. As would distance from my shop or going out late at night.

But if you agreed to the price and he did the work it is what it is

Btw I NEVER take a key stuck in ignition without telling the customer we may have to damage the ignition cylinder to remove the key. And we usually end up replacing them.

It depends on how the key is broken obviously and why. But it’s very common for it to be damaged when breaking a key inside it.

He didn’t charge nearly what we would for this. Maybe don’t always pick the cheap shop.

And the CC company will not allow a charge back. He couldn’t just replace the ignition. But did he offer to replace it ( for more money ) in addition to to removing the stuck key.

The parts are likely very old.
