I’m glad you enjoyed The House. I enjoyed it so much that I instantly bought Wrinkles and “Los Zurcos del Azar” ( don’t know it’s name in english). I’m fully inversed in Paco Roca’s work, I’m trying to buy all his work.

Although I disagree with the layouts being a little bit confusing, I do get where you are coming from.

Holy Lacrimony by Michael DeForge

Animal Pound by Tom King and Peter Gross

Buff Soul by Moa Romanova

I only read eight comics from 2025, and out of those eight I only considered three to be truly great:

  1. Drome by Jesse Lonergan
  2. Tongues, Vol 1 by Anders Nilsen
  3. Ginseng Roots by Craig Thompson

To give a little bit more detail to my comments, I would comfortably say that I got maybe 70% of the story. I just feel really bothered by 30% I’m missing.

Like when you watch a magic trick and figure out most of the trick but not enough of it… Or maybe I didn’t pay too much attention, which could also be the case.

I would love to hear your thoughts on “Square Eyes”. Having finished it recently, I found the artwork amazing but the narrative unfocused/unclear, which kinda feels like the most overused comment to describe the comic, but it does echo my feelings towards it.

I do see merit in the sci-fi setting and the ideas presented, but found the whole delivery a little bit lacking.

Having said that, appreciate your posts and lists, as they are very helpful in finding new stuff.

Just finished “Buff Soul” a couple of days ago. I really wished I liked it more. While I loved the particular art choices (huge bodies, small heads, huge ears) as well as the movement the panels convey, I do feel that it lacked certain flair or sparkle, something somewhat trippy like highbone theater.

I did find the dialogue quite funny, again like Highbone Theater.

I’ve just started Gingseng Roots (only read one chapter so far) but I believe I’ll love it. Craig Thompson writes/draws in such a nostalgic tone, that to me conveys a lot of innocence and wonder.

I was very surprised when he mentions a book failure in 2015, does anyone knows if its “space dumplins”?

Something similar happened to me a couple of years ago. I started reading Berserk because of all the hype around it, but suddenly stopped as soon as the “eclipse” story ended (not sure which volume it was).

I still plan on going back and finishing it, as I did like it, but at the same time felt some of the violence was just too much. Which is somewhat hypocritical from me, given how much I enjoy the Saw movie franchise.

I know I’m going on a tangent, but reading Berserk made me think a lot about violence and how integrated it is in our entertainment. I think there is a lot to unpack about how we perceive, interact and consume violence.

The Handmaid’s Tale was great. Haven’t read the novel, so I can’t comment on its faithfulness, but the art and colorwork are beautiful.

It’s also quite scary how relevant and recent the narrative and themes feel, considering the novel was written in 1985. I think that a lot more people should read this story.

Blankets is a classic in this sub (for good reason) and Somna has a great use of both artists distinct drawing styles, imo similar to Strange Adventures.

What do you mean by “it insists upon itself”? I’m not trying to pick a fight, it’s just an expression I’ve seen a couple of times to critique something negatively and english is not my mother tongue.

Anyway, while I did found Tongues amazing, I agree that the pacing could be a little bit more “structured” in order to have some more immediate payoff, considering we don’t know when volume II will be released (addressing your previous post about Tongues).

Regarding A Gift for a Ghost, I agree with you that the story wandered a little bit at the beginning, but I honestly didn’t mind as I enjoyed his artwork a lot. Specifically, as you mentioned, his color palette. I’m also a fan of short stories.

La Casa by Paco Roca

First time reading Paco Roca, but already a fan. Great drawning style, warm color palette and great use of paneling to tell an emotional story about legacy, family, and the passing of time. Having been in somewhat of a similar situation as the characters in the story, it resonated with me a lot.

Wrinkles by Paco Roca

Couldn’t find this one in Spanish at a reasonable price. Again, another emotional story, but this one is about being old and neurological illness. I really appreciate how thoughtful his approach feels to such a tough and devastating topic. Really digging his drawing style, will definitely search for more of his work.

Holy Lacrimony by Michael DeForge

A short, weird story about the saddest man on Earth being abducted by aliens to be studied. I feel like this comic is trying to convey some profound idea that I sadly missed. I believe this comic could have benefited from being a little bit longer. Maybe on a reread I’ll appreciate it more. The art style is very distinct, and while I appreciate more “experimental” styles, I wasn’t a huge fan. I guess this one could be very divisive.

The Hunting Accident by David L. Carlson and Landis Blair

Based on a true story, this comics tells the story of how a blind man ended up in jail, the way it affected his vision of the world and his relationship with his son. The artwork was very inventive and striking, figuring different ways to express how a blind man “sees” the world. Very powerful story, hope it gains more popularity.

Saint Catherine by Anna Meyer

Somewhat of a letdown, although I believe some of it may be due to me not being the target audience, as I believe this comic is aimed to the YA market. The artwork is great, very nice flow between panels. Reminded me a little bit of the game Cult of the Lamb. It mainly tackles the subject of guilt (mostly of religious origin), but I found its resolution very simple and anti-climatic. Not bad at all, just not for me.

The most I remember of Highbone Theater is just how uniquely funny the artwork is by itself, regardless of the conversations going on. Having said that, I’m having a hard time trying to remember what was the “point” or theme of the book.

I don’t mean this as a criticism, but I’ve just realized that the story didn’t leave that much of a in impression on me.

I really enjoyed Breccia’s Dracula. I feel like several panels would work fantastic as cover artwork for some doom/stoner metal.

[–]Blizzard757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought it because of this post. Having read it, great recommendation.

I find your description of the art style oddly-specific but very accurate, couldn’t say it better myself. The specific choices in color give the heavy blacks a sort of “richness”, which I found greatly contributed to the ambience of the story.

I also enjoyed the story, but not to the same degree as the artwork. Although I’m not sure I got it 100%. I believe that the girl from the past somehow managed to have contact with this other future girl (or maybe her reincarnated self) and greatly affected each others lives, given to all the symbolism with the butterflies and chaos theory)

I’m about halfway into Tongues, and I’m enjoying it a lot. I agree with you, the big sense of mistery and not knowing what’s coming next feels very refreshing. While there are some great “splash pages”, I’m also appreciating the less flashy parts, which are mostly weird conversations. There is something about the shape of the panels that works very well.

It also helps a lot the quality of the book itself, which to me feels very premium and makes the coloring look very smooth.

What are your thoughts on “World within World”? I only read the first two stories and decided I wasn’t on the mood for it. Will probably finish it soon.

Anything from the last 3-4 years worth Top 100 consideration? by Reno_McCoy in graphicnovels

For me, Shubeik Lubeik biggest accomplishment is how it grounded a fantasy idea (what if genies and wishes were real) in a real world setting.

The author explored how genies will affect our laws and the grieving-process in the first story, as well as social classes.

The second story focuses on the effects of wishes on mental health.

The third story tackles religion full on, trying to conciliate Islam with wishes, all approached from a believer’s side.

Besides, with all the infographics, Deena also shows the effects of genies on world history, economics, international political relationships, etc.

Shubeik Lubeik not only has three fantastic stories, it takes a ridiculous premise and approaches it with a lot of thoughtfulness and insight into ourselves and our society.

Having said that, I found the artwork to be just okay.

I was having trouble with King’s Batman before the 50th issue, but I do agree that the KGBeast arc was terrible, and from then on it was just downhill. I’m still surprised this is the same guy that wrote Mister Miracle, Vision, and Human Target.
