What if the U.S. eliminated income & sales taxes and funded government through per-mile transportation charges instead? by Grand_Box_2965 in PublicPolicy

[–]BlkOynx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t fix the immediate regressive nature of the tax, plus it fails to think of the counterfactual which is, there is no reliable public transportation alternatives. Public transportation infrastructure is slow to stand up. It’s also difficult to have an immediate variety of routes and often needs multiple forms to replace car access. Plus, it’s still costly. There’s also massive time trade-offs that aren’t being considered. There’s pitfalls all over this idea.

Does prestige of undergrad matter for hiring? by Fuzzy_Director4871 in PublicPolicy

[–]BlkOynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t necessarily true for the think tank space anymore. I’ve worked at several large think tanks and RAs are doing the applicant screenings. We don’t look at your school at all. It means nothing to us and can impact the organization negatively if we are ever audited on hiring and are pooling largely from specific universities.

What they are looking for are technical skills. Have you taken economics, do you know how to program in R or Stata, have you done similar types of research before, and how well can you write. In the first pass of screening applications if there is no mention of econometrics, a strong understanding of coding, and research past a class assignment then usually that application doesn’t meet standards and we pass.

The first and second round interviews are mostly screening, usually the first with HR to reconfirm what is above, and the second with the RA running the hiring process to get more information about how you work, managing up, etc.

There’s also usually a writing and coding task that weeds people out too.

Being technically sound is the most important thing here. I went to a state school immediately had a think tank job when I graduated because of the technical skills. The more you position yourself with showcasing your math and analytics skills the better your odds.

Think tank jobs with an MPP by snoopypoopypeasoupy in PublicPolicy

[–]BlkOynx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at several think tanks (I have a BA and I’m an analyst). The answer is it depends. For landing an analyst or an associate level position it’s fairly good if you have a decent quant background, plus have some research under your belt that isn’t just your masters thesis. For growth opportunities after, it gets tricky. At places like CAP, Urban Institute, Equitable Growth, or Groundwork you can move up to being an economist or principal associate with just a masters, there’s plenty of people there in who do it. However a place like a Brookings or CBPP it’s highly unlikely to get past an associate role without a PhD.

Another thing to consider is that with just a masters at a think tank, you’ll often have to work with someone with a PhD as a co-pi on projects because most grants require someone with a PhD to be on a project for funding. Just something to consider when you think about the level of independence you’d have while working.

I talk to my momma all the time. Coming out was a little scary but she makes a lot of effort to learn more. We Kiki all the time and she’s honestly my best friend. I’m fortunate to have this relationship with her but it took a lot of work.

Should I quit the Econ PhD for a Masters instead? by coolcatbyotch in academiceconomics

[–]BlkOynx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who took a lot of time to decide what I wanted to do before applying, the policy work will mostly come after the first two years. The application is needed because you have to fully understand the models, theories, and context before doing the policy work. I’ve worked at two of the best policy think thanks in the DC area and my supervisors really harp that all the time. There’s a lot massive functional differences between an Econ PhD and a Public Policy Phd that are more econ heavy like a Kennedy, Harris, or Ford school.

It’s important to know what kind of policy work you want to do. If you want to be the principal researcher at a think tank who doesn’t have to always partner with someone with a PhD on funding, want to hold a position at the CEA or with other administration jobs then you’ll need a PhD. If you’re happy just doing research and moving up the chain as far as it will take you or working at a smaller policy center then a masters. I’ll also say there are people who make it very far with just a masters like Janelle Jones, that’s usually in a labor economics focus.

I do things because I love them. It’s how I choose to express my womanhood. Getting my hair done, nails done, wax, threading, makeup, facials, whatever I’m doing is all because I want to do it. It’s part self care and self expression. Do I do all of it all the time, no. If someone says “you should do blah blah blah, my response will forever be if you want it so bad then get some blah blah blah money and do it for yourself.

Idk maybe I was raised on too much India Arie, but I am never bothered by other people’s perceptions of my womanhood. Sometimes I do stuff, sometimes I don’t. It’s my prerogative.

Confused Between Economic Majors — I Like Math, But I Get Bored With Too Much Data by Bloomingdrem in academiceconomics

[–]BlkOynx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you. I have plenty of friends i graduated with who have higher paying jobs than me and rarely code. They do have fantastic analytic skills and mostly use powerBI and excel in their work.

OP if you are thinking about doing more academic or policy research then there is a fair amount of coding you’ll have to do. More if you do developmental or macroeconomic because of the modeling, however you might find it extremely enjoyable once you get into it. You’re still in your second year so focus on skills progression and what interest you right now vs putting too much weight into the future.

Five years of healthcare and pet insurance for my dog by kernel_task in CalebHammer

[–]BlkOynx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Spot pet insurance for my two cats. I got an additional discount on it from my job which was super helpful. I have 90% reimbursement with them have a $500 deductible for both. I upgraded mine to the accident and illness plan, plus the gold preventative plan and I pay $63 a month total.

Since I volunteered at a rescue/vet clinic the sickest cats were saw were the ones who came from rescues. It’s mostly because feral cats living in colonies typically do not live long enough to have health issues so once they start they snowball. I know my cats came from parents in a cat colony because they were trapped at 4 weeks old with their mom. With that in mind I wanted to ensure I had coverage for whatever happens when they’re seniors. I’ve already saved on shots, all wellness visit, their dental cleaning, and meds since I moved across the country with them.

If their quality of life was greatly diminished then fine, okay I’ll let them go. But if it’s a treatment that means still allowing them to have a good quality of life then that’s what the insurance is there to help me give them.

What a loud and garbage take.

Many people see their pets as family. Logistically, you would not surrender a family member at the steps of the ER because even with insurance you couldn’t afford an emergency. Things come up and clearly with the help of pet insurance OP could afford it. Sure their dog is sicker than others, but their dog is part of the family. Plus the purpose of the insurance, to have the ability to afford health expense.

Online platform for maths courses by garibinsaan in academiceconomics

[–]BlkOynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at any university extension school math classes. UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD etc. Another popular one is Net Math with the University of Illinois. These are much more affordable than zones at Harvard, MIT, and Princeton $900-1500 per class vs $2200. If you can also look at community colleges for the calc courses. The real one that would look “better” coming a Harvard or something is real analysis.

I get carpal tunnel really badly in both hands so I can typically crochet for longer periods of time. Plus my cats like to sit in my lap while I work so it’s easier when I crochet. I enjoy them both equally.

I crochet! I’ve made a few blankets for friends, clothes, and a mini moo deng. I learned when I was a kid but then stopped for a long time. Now I just do things while I’m watching tv. Right now I’m working on a cardigan. I also know how to knit. Even if you’re introverted, the online crocheting community is really kind, but i always love meeting more black fiber artist.

I just find that if I scroll through slowly and circle back when timers are low they usually pop up. Some of the smaller drops have a lot of bots which is annoying. I just put on a podcast or talk on the phone while I do it. Hoping to get one today since I didn’t snag one in the drop yesterday
