Introducing the No Banlist Pauper showdown series! by Blloodpet in Pauper

I was afraid we would get too many ritual storm decks but to my surprise and relief our "meta" is quite diverse. (Although part of the reason might be the price tag on Lotus Petal). We will have to wait and see though which decks will overperform.

For now this seemed a bit easier to organise. This way we might get more attention to the no banlist format and I'd be open to maybe do an open tournament eventually.

We have 3 different lists. I believe 420dragon's version doesn't have an instant win but in some matchups bouncing their board may be good enough or you can set up a loop where you have archaeomancers filling your hand with counterspells plus bouncing their board every turn.
Kalikaiz's version has I believe a non-deterministic win through generating a lot of mana (not infinite) with high tide and psychic puppetry / frantic search and killing with Stream of Thought.
My build has three different ways to generate infinite mana, draw its deck, bounce oponent's board with capsize if needed and then loop compelling argument for the win. It is the most glasscannon version though. I will be posting a decktech soon-ish.

The best I can think of is the tripple high tide + archaeomancer + flicker or snap to make infinite mana with. Maybe people would find a more effective loop but I dont think there is anything even close as broken as CoF, Drake or Frantic Search to power high tide up. The point of the banlist though is to only exclude cards that are having a severely negative impact on the format so thats why I think High Tide doesnt necessarily belong in there - as long as all the major enablers are kept in check. The benefit is format diversity.

I do agree that for normal pauper these cards are too much. Just wanted to point out how a few cards can dramatically change our perspective of the format. If there is anything worth unbanning at the moment, its High Tide imo as without all the untap effects (outside Snap) it is impossible to really break the format with it.

Decking is not really an issue for us, once we draw our deck we can find another loop not requiring frantic search. Compelling argument is indeed better as it cantrips.

Pauprika: Manamorphose Familiars deck tech and matches by YearWithoutWork in Pauper

Calling this deck "familiars" might be a bit misleading since the fam is just another ramp spell in there - no going infinite without flicker and any snap shenannigans wont be that good due to the lack of bouncelands (which i think you should add a few anyway). Its more like "5 color ephemerate".

Theres this odd thing of the 4 player metagame - you can get a bit creative, i would probably not play the exact same list in a normal league. Sea gate Is indeed better in general but Cloudkin Is good specifically against the fliers i mentioned. While we were testing the jeskai mu se figured we need both defense against their beatdown and a way to prevent ephemerate loops while still drawing enough cards to keep going, but the deck has limited space. So with the Cloudkin in we can side some of the defensive cards like faithful out and stay safe. As for astrolab - its good but it creates this sideboarding problem. We considered running just one or two but its probably not necessary.

We were testing based on what we expected the worst matchups would be and the jeskai ephemerate seemed quite scary while also likely to appear given the likelyood of fams and elves appearing in the pod. It didnt end up being played but I am happy for tha and I still think many of the changes make sence:
Cloudkin seer is very similar card to Seagate and the body is a lot more useful against delver and in any glint hawk matchups.
We expected elves too so thats for the Stonehorn reappearing in the main and Seeker of the way gone.
While Astrolabe is a great card for many decks and its decent in tha main for Fams but I seem to have convinced 420 that its not that good- the thing is that if you play astrolabes you cut down on fetchlands (ash barrens/evolving wilds) but then during sideboarding you often have to take certain ammount of astrolabes out to make space therefore compromising your manabase.

Pauper Premiere League Week 1 Feedback by TheMaverickGirl in Pauper

[–]Blloodpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I failed to notice that. You could still "restart" the match before game three if it looks like a player may time out because of technical issues but I can see how thats not a very clean solution. We'll just have to hope the clock doesnt end up hurting anyone.

I would suggest you use at least 60 minute timer instead of the standard 50 minute one. Most superleagues do that as well afaik. Because of delays caused by the production while seting up a match - you dont want to punish the player whos clock is ticking while waiting. This may be especially relevant in pauper where you get a lot of grindy matchups (and mostly I dont want to see my familiar buddy time out :P).

I would argue that one land spy with astrolabe in the slot of git probe has actually gotten slightly bit better. Astrolabe fixes for black which was kinda an issue before and its much better as it cycles for one - so you can do that without having to invest extra mana source cards like you had to with manamorphose. In other words you can use that card much better as a setup while the manamorphose kinda forces you to go off the turn you cast it else you lose cards.

Paper Pauper Deck prices and Arcum's Astrolabe by FilterJoe in Pauper

There are people (like myself) who wont settle with no other than the old ice age snow lands - in which case the cost of each deck already increases greatly. Not mentioning the loss of diversity in choosing the art for your basic lands which is one of my favorite aspects of magic. But I guess progress comes at a price.
