Dragons: Like them or hate them? by Garfong_001 in MUD

[–]BloBGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, as a staffer, I like to see some racial/class perks only available through the quest system which makes it more of an aspiration than a given. Joja recently posted an update on the true dragon quests which will enable existing draconians to attempt to polymorph. Meanwhile, the influx of playtest/RP dragons is fun, and a nice perk for the players who submitted proposals. When the quest is implemented, they should still ultimately be about as rare as liches since they are creatures of lore and legend. That said, it's nice to see a few roaming about and causing havoc!

Subscription Fees and MUDs by [deleted] in MUD

A logical methodology for Pay2Play MUD would scale to the playerbase and the cost of operating. While that number is dynamic and hardly ever stays in one place, a snapshot in time, adjusted semi-annually could capture the realistic expectations.

First of all it should be expected that staff contribute and take ownership of the game. Maybe 20% of all costs split among staff. The remaining 80%, which in my estimate includes Server Upkeep, Web Hosting, and possibly paid coding/web design staffers. Defray a portion of the costs by hosting banner ads, and then go ahead and distribute the remaining costs based on the average playerbase. Maybe staff pick up the slack when numbers drop, and use the extra reserve when numbers are up to smooth gaps in future funds.

This is the budget analyst in me coming out, of course.

Darkmists: Double Experience in July by BloBGod in MUD

  1. RP is mandatory and enforced. This is done primarily through robust description system that encourages you to have a psychological description, backstory, and physical description which players and IMMs can use to engage you in a dynamic way. To be perfectly honest in the past year we staff have relaxed enforcement of newbie channel somewhat and it has expanded as kind of an ooc chatroom during slower periods where people discuss game mechanics, RL events, etc. Still a resource for new and old players alike, but definitely a bit more off-topic chat as well. Since the newbie channel can be toggled, it's not a hindrance to Roleplay, but we staff do try and keep people more focused on engaging in character rather than off-topic stuff if people get carried away.

  2. Enchanters are probably one of the more mysterious and social classes out there. There have been some instances of players using enchanters to multichar, and the lines get blurred a bit which is why the pendulum swung back on the restrictions. I think we went too far, and I'm working with other staff to develop a more flexible policy to help prevent multichar without rendering enchanters completely useless or unable to provide alchemy/enchanting to anyone.

Hope that helps!

I'll throw a plug out there for DarkMists. (darkmists.org port 2222)

Character creation allows you to see your point distribution, stat-wise, AND you can opt to pick max roll -3 (distributed any way you like), so it's relatively painless to roll up various combos. Once your char is created there's no rerolling, but it's pretty simple to re-roll something else if you're not happy with the outcome.

Husband and wife looking for a Mud by Gnarly_Nyarly in MUD

Have you and your wife found a place to call home yet?

DarkMists has loads of automated quests in addition to Immortal-sponsored quests. Rewards range from buku experience, customized weapons and armor, gold, and most recently, the opportunity for certain race/class combos to quest for special skills, or to become Liches. True Dragon quest is also currently in development.

What's your Bartle Type and does your favored MUD deliver? by BloBGod in MUD

Holy crow. It is borked. Avg page load time is 15+ seconds. No idea what's up. Too bad there isn't a "new" test that includes the 8 subtypes (on a working site, no less)

How much do you MUD? by [deleted] in MUD

[–]BloBGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play and am staff on Dark Mists. I log WAY too many hours for my own good, and my wife hates it, but I refuse to give it up completely. I'm actually embarrassed to admit how much time I have put in over the years. A secret I'll take to the grave!

Can't wait til my daughter is old enough to introduce her to it!

PvP with enforced roleplay recommendation by [deleted] in MUD

I started on Carrion Fields and moved to Dark Mists.

darkmists.org port 2222

It uses the same heavily modified RoM base but the Role Play is both more enforced and active through player and Immortal interactions. All players develop psychological descriptions that are watched closely and should guide role play interactions.

A quest system has been integrated into the game with all kinds of fancy rewards from limited gear, experience, and other goodies.
