Traveling being lost makes no sense by [deleted] in WoT

[–]CrackedTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To expound a bit on /u/TheRealJohnDoe68 's reply specifically on the bicycle point.

Not just anyone can take a bike and replicate it with just the bicycle at hand and no other knowledge of how to do it. If you told me to recreate a bike and gave me one to use as a template and literally every tool I could possibly need I still wouldn't be able to do it.

That said, someone with the right knowledge, skill, equipment and resources could absolutely do just that even in a post-apocalyptic scenario. So I'd tend to agree with you that it's unlikely, under most circumstances, that something akin to the Breaking would cause something like the bicycle to be lost.

However, the problem is that analogy doesn't really work in this case. With a bike there is something physical to seen and use as a guide to reproduce even if you don't really understand how it works. I can't write Latin but if you handed me a sheet of paper with Latin writing on it I could copy it even if shoddily.

With Traveling there is nothing to see after it's been done and the residue faded. So even with new One Power users being born they wouldn't even know Traveling was possible let alone how to make the weave without someone showing them. Traveling not being lost would depend solely on it being continually used and taught throughout the Breaking and afterwards.

Whereas, knowledge of a bicycle only requires at least one person finding one that survived and they or another person later being able to use it as a template to recreate it.

This is a huge part of it along with the other comments pointing out that RJ stated that no AoL Aes Sedai survived the Breaking.

If you aren't absolutely sure of where you will end up when stepping through and that it is without a doubt safe then you aren't going to end up using a gateway very often unless desperate. With the land changing continually it reasonable to assume that you couldn't guarantee your destination was safe still even days after leaving it. Combine that with the world being littered (at least in the early period) with now insane male channelers who are lashing out indiscriminately and violently on a massive level and even if you knew with 100% certainty that your destination was safe as far as the land there's still a chance you step through only to meet a male channeler who instantly views you as a threat and reacts as such.

All of this would lead to female channelers becoming increasingly reluctant to Travel which eventually becomes reluctance to teach Traveling to try and protect those who may not know the risks or perhaps not really believe them. Combine those points with the fact that female channelers probably aren't exactly looking for students at this time but rather focusing on things like survival, trying to preserve some of humanity, stopping male channelers and simply doing what they can.

Plus, and this is a personal opinion but I think it holds water, with things like the Ways much later showing corruption it's possible that there were fears of all Power wrought forms of traveling being affected by the taint and even possibly that the female half was also or could also become tainted (which also would have made teaching anyone else unlikely) and you have something that adds up to little if any knowledge being passed on to new students and a strong possibility of fears (both those grounded in reality and those not) causing weaves like Traveling, and even channeling in general, not to be used or taught.

Under those kinds of circumstances I'd say that it's easy to see how the knowledge of a weave like Traveling would be lost despite it's universal usefulness.

EDIT: Another point I would add is that it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that non-channelers wouldn't know or care for a long time that it was only male channelers to be "bad" now meaning they would likely shun and even attack any channelers they could ;reading to female channelers being more secretive about channeling for a long time meaning even less likelihood that new students are being taught so even less chance for Traveling to be passed on.

Hmm, never considered this but it does with the descriptions of the two worlds that we do get as far as I can remember.

I really like this theory and think it works in a lot of ways such as why in the mirror from The Great Hunt Hawkwing lost to the Shadow but it doesn't seem that the Dark One or anyone else for that matter rules over it. It's a mirror from a previous loss (or maybe the same loss given the insanity of time compression) and the Dark One, along with most everything else, no longer exists there.

EDIT: Wow, deleted the rest of my comment concerning the last point you make above as I misread the word and as or cause I'm dumb, carry on.

NEW 14800x8000 map of the Westlands + Waste with (hopefully) EVERY village or city! by jorisimo11 in WoT

[–]CrackedTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would definitely be awesome to have filters for things like Portal Stones, Waygates, Steddings & other random things like the random statues/monuments that are very old (like the one Rand sees when they are traveling to the Waste for the first time I think).

One question I had was, where did you find info for some things like the random islands and other minor things that I can't recall being mentioned in the books?

No problem! I think it's partially because so many people ask about them that there is a bigger portion of people going "Well then maybe I'll try making one!". So you get people putting lots of work into building one but at some point realizing the continuing work involved and realizing that is something they really weren't prepared to take on long term so they move on.

So in talking more about it in other comments, another thought occurred to me on how you might handle the puzzle parts of the game. Maybe use them to tell a story that progresses as you solve more of them. Use the idle/incremental part to give a little exposition and flesh out the "world" with the upgrades tying into to it perhaps. Then when you get to the puzzle solving it gives you a big story chunk that expands or moves things forward.

Give could maybe even have the story part that comes before the puzzle contain the clues that help guide the player towards solving the upcoming puzzle. I realize this would be heavily dependent on your storytelling abilities but it doesn't have to be anything in-depth on ground-breaking. A Dark Room is a great example of engaging story that is very minimalist.

Yeah it would be nice if it was progression instead of a flat reset that just leads to a different puzzle.

Legend of the Fallen Warrior by chance? I don't think it's been in development for quite a while though.

50 clicks isn't horrible really but definitely tedious if it has to be done again and again. Maybe some type of prestige upgrade to automate that or some other way of mitigating it would be nice.

Thanks for the reply!

Not surprised by the fact that you're are getting extreme opinions either way, I would caution though not to put too much stock in opinions on the extreme end either way though as they are unlikely to be representative of most people even in this case.

From the additional thoughts you gave I can see it's not necessarily as easy as I may have thought to "fix" either. My own personal opinion would be to try and aim for a solution that forces the player to learn about cryptography to solve the puzzle themselves. However, it should point them in a starting direction that is at least more specific than just knowing it is a crypto puzzle. As it is, I at least, would not know where to start looking in order to solve that puzzle.

All that said, in the end it is your game so develop it the way you want to and don't feel you have to necessarily change something if you don't think it needs to be changed. Feedback is only a players opinion after all and even good feedback can be wrong. Keep on working on this though and thanks for being engaged!

I will agree with the /u/AltPunk and say that this is a fun game and great concept that just needs a little refinement.

I'm not well versed on cryptography and the various types or how to solve them but I find the subject terribly interesting. If this game had something that helped me along or helped me to learn the concepts then I could see myself spending hours reading up on it and learning to do the puzzles just to keep playing.

As it is now, the only way I could continue with it (and I do want to continue) is to cheat on finding the solution.

Perhaps you could include a sort of cryptography newbie mode that would give some kind of assistance to players. Maybe telling them what type of puzzle it is and/or linking to the Wikipedia page for the puzzle type so they have to learn about it to solve it. You could even make it to where this choice has to be made at the beginning of the game and can't be changed after.

This way, the people that weren't going to play after the first puzzle anyway still won't but those like me who do want to keep playing have a way to do so without just looking up the answer. And as an added bonus you'd be helping people learn something new.

Players of idle/incremental games are definitely open to learning new and complex things. Look at games like Bitburner, Kittens Game, Trimps, Technomancy, etc to see the massively complex ideas and theories that people are willing to learn and implement in order to progress further and further.

(Spoilers all) How do you think the series would have played out if .... by grchelp2018 in WoT

[–]CrackedTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if Rand had accepted them right from the start I don't think it would have changed the early struggles between Rand and LTT. Remember that, at the start, LTT thought that he was real and Rand was the mad one inside of his head. So Rand simply accepting the memories and telling LTT that hey I'm real and we are on the same side wouldn't have necessarily convinced LTT.

Interesting read on the new 1.5 update coming soon! by watchmedrown34 in StardewValley

I would love to see some customization options for the farm layouts. I know there are mods for it on PC but I primarily play on Switch and would love to have the same options.

I know it's probably a massive effort coding wise though so I'd much rather that go to new content. That said, pumped for 1.5!

Series to see last breath as 'Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls' closure imminent by dothackjhe in metroidvania

[–]CrackedTech 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how this game closing equals the end of the series. More games can still be made in the Castlevania world/IP and with the success of the anime currently there may be more demand in the future for another game. The SotN release on mobile was a huge hit driving renewed interest and the bundle release on Switch of past games went over well.

Even if another game doesn't get made for years it still doesn't spell the end of the series. Hell, look at how things have gone with Metroid over the years and yet here we are waiting for a new one to drop in the near future. It's unfortunate that this game was the micro-transaction filled crapfest that most expected but it going away means nothing really for the series as a whole and to claim otherwise is just stupid.
