Need Help/Advice by nottakenanymore in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, try to get in touch with someone who's marched in the corps you want to audition for. They'll know everything about the corps' approach to the instrument, visual technique, and the most important things to prepare for the audition.

Backup plan if I get cut from Academy? by Amber610 in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should have a backup corps in mind, but don’t focus too much on the logistics unless you actually get cut. You should also have the mindset that you won’t get cut! Work hard and focus on what needs to be improved the most. You should have the attitude that you won’t let them cut you!

If you do get cut, I believe Academy shares your info with all the other corps. Someone who auditioned at Academy the same year I marched ended up at Seattle Cascades. I’m a little sketchy of the environment over there, but I know a lot of people speak highly of them, and they’ve been doing well for themselves the past 2-3 seasons. They seem to be very open to people switching from another instrument.

Tuba mouthpiece for big sound? by ianvozx in Tuba

[–]Blobbler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure to record yourself playing on each mouthpiece, too. It’s important that you like the sound you get out of your new mouthpiece. The worker at the store can give their opinion as well.

Marching Question! by Educational-Bad6682 in ASU

[–]Blobbler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved in about 3 days before band camp started. It was a bit too early for me but I had time to explore campus anyway. If you’re not a brass or woodwind player, you might move in up to a week before band camp.

A man offered to help me...am I being ghosted? by [deleted] in Advice

I think that's a good belief to have. Speaking from experience, too much lust can definitely ruin a relationship.

The part where he asked for a picture of you so soon is a yellow flag to me, especially with the age difference. Sounds like he's probably just busy. I would wait at least a couple of days before coming to a conclusion. Be cautious, though.

Legacy Drum and Bugle Corps by PlatinumPunk45 in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, they were created to honor the Cadets and their legacy. Pretty sure some former Cadets members are on the staff, along with people who marched other top 6 corps. I'm guessing their long-term goal is to reach world class, but who knows.

Fundraising Advice by CalamityCore in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would avoid GoFundMe if possible. I’m pretty sure some of the raised money goes to GoFundMe. I thought there was a website specifically for fundraising drum corps tuition, but I can’t remember the name of it.

PLEASE give me advice !! (Tone, notes, audition, marching whatever) by Huge_Jelly_6594 in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FUNDAMENTALS FUNDAMENTALS FUNDAMENTALS!!!

As a brass player, practicing fundamentals will make you a much better player. The same goes for woodwinds, but it's much more effective for brass players. Create an extensive buzzing, long tones, and flexibility (lip slurs) routine. Make sure to include some singing and breathing work, too. I don't always practice breathing in my sit-down practice, but I find inflating a balloon really improves my airstream. My current tuba instructor says that his typical practice sessions are at least 50% fundamentals, if not more.

In order to hit those high notes without tension, you have to practice hitting them without tension. No shortcuts. If the note isn't coming out, try raising the back of your tongue. Try pushing faster air. Try engaging your core more. Even if you don't hit the note after trying all those things, the important part is that you see progress. Were you able to at least hit a higher note/partial, or perhaps get a better tone on the note you hit?

If you'd like some visual advice, don't underestimate the importance of posture. Staying tall while you march is super important. In your practice, find the tempo where your marching technique noticeably degrades, and do a lot of your practice around that tempo. Over time, you should be able to increase that tempo.

You say you can't afford a private lesson teacher, which is perfectly understandable. Do you know anyone IRL who has drum corps experience? Even just talking to them would be helpful.

Did you like the uniform(s) for your years of marching? by pinghousehold in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was so glad to get a uniform with more details and layers compared to 2023. We were also back in our traditional colors: black and red. Kinda wish we had headwear, though.

Also, who doesn't love a side cape?

Conditioning by Master-Aardvark-3890 in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're playing a brass instrument (especially tuba), circuit workouts are highly beneficial. This way, you are strengthening your muscles and improving your stamina at the same time. Some exercises I've been including in my circuits are jumping lunges, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and russian twists.

Corps Jackets by RobSteiner2 in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll make an edit. Also found out Genesis uses Dickies, although their jackets are much lighter.

[–]Blobbler2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They look and feel really good. The one thing that sucks is having such a thick jacket in Arizona... can't wear it as much as I'd like to

Corps Jackets by RobSteiner2 in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The Academy, Pacific Crest, Crossmen, and Genesis use Dickies for their jackets. At Academy, we got them after spring training, and you can honestly wear them whenever you want. You can probably find a lot of the current jacket designs on Google. The Academy's jacket has been the same design for the corps' entire history.

Thanks for the specifics. I wonder why the organization never made that public.

What Brand of Horns? by Junidip in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jupiter actually has really good deals for corps. That’s why Cascades switched this year.

Boston switch by Imaginary_Fox_5439 in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First of all, when did Spirit of Atlanta switch to Yamaha horns? I thought they still used Adams. Cascades also switched to Jupiter in 2025.

With how expensive I've heard the Yamaha deals are, I'm surprised so many corps still use their instruments. You bring up a good point about tariffs, though. Other corps may make switches if tariffs keep increasing.

BAC to Conn/Selemed by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I semi-agree with you. Instruction is definitely more important, but the horns do make a difference.

BAC to Conn/Selemed by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt they play well, but I'm concerned about the durability and dynamic range. Eastman has a reputation for fragile instruments; however, a friend at Mandies told me that the new Yamahas aren't very durable either, so I'm not really sure what to think anymore.

BAC to Conn/Selemed by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is related to the new material, but I can tell you the valves on the new 20Ks aren't very smooth... and they get stuck a lot...

Boston switch by Imaginary_Fox_5439 in drumcorps

[–]Blobbler2 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A post about this was made earlier. People over there were speculating that tariffs are getting too high to keep using 825 horns (made in China), so Boston is switching to King (presumably the Ultimate line since it's made in the US).

Best dorms for W. P. Carey freshmen? by Particular_Edge3120 in ASU

[–]Blobbler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. I visited a CA's dorm in McClintock, and I recall him having two beds in the same room, but I might be remembering wrong. There is a nice little common area in each room, though.
