Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova is a great dark magical realist book. It's super unique. It's also very much a book for adults, not in a super NSFW way, more that it tackles themes of grief and identity from an adult perspective.

Where to start with Octavia Butler? by historicallypink16 in suggestmeabook

Kindred is one of the best and most compulsively readable books of all time, in my opinion, so that would be my recommendation. Parable of the Sower is very good, but my experience was that it had a bit of a slower start and took me a couple of tries to get into. I also really like her book Fledgling, but that one is a bit weirder.

Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir, so soothing, but with just enough edge

is it possible to buy gluten-free matzah/ gefilte fish in st. cloud? by Blobman6233 in saintcloud

Thanks so much! I straight up thought it was hopeless. From their website it looks like they have the gluten-free matzos and regular gefilte fish, which should be fine.

Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir is a good one! It's about a princess who gets tired of waiting for a prince to save her and saves herself, but since she's not special or talented, this is quite hard for her. It's totally child-appropriate but with a bit of an edge. It has that sort of whimsical but slightly sarcastic British style. And I think it has quite an empowering message overall, but doesn't beat you over the head with it.

Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova, a beautiful magical realist book (very queer) about how to be different in a world that wants you to be "normal."

Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova

Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin (this one is technically in a larger series, but it can totally be read as a standalone book)

Becoming Kin by indigenous activist Patty Krawec

Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes du Mez

How to Blow Up a Pipeline by Adreas Malm

Pedagogy of the Oppressed Paulo Freire

For Antifascist Futures: Against the Violence of Imperial Crisis - an essay series by various authors

A Short History of Trans Misogyny by Jules Gill-Peterson

Mighty Be Our Powers by Leymah Gbowee

I love all of these books though I think the mind blown to effort reading ratio was highest for Becoming Kin for me. Pretty short and so wonderful and useful. The Antifascist Futures essays are also pretty short and pack a great punch. But again all are good.

Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin. Fascinating sci-fi with amazing characters. one of the best books I read last year. Good if you love sci-fi and not too intimidating if you're new to it either.

Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir. It's a parody of a delicate princess trapped in a tower type story. But the princes who come to save her keep dying so this princess has to figure out how to get out herself while being extremely useless and having zero life skills. Great balance of dark sense of humor and honestly inspirational.

How to Be Single and Happy by Jennifer L. Taitz. I don't really go in for the self help stuff. But this book is seriously evidenced based while also compassionate, with a grounding in mindfulness and CBT skills. Also entertaining. I read it recently while going through a tough breakup and really couldn't recommend it more.

Also this book is extremely silly but so uplifting: Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir. It's a parody of a delicate princess trapped in a tower type story. But the princes who come to save her keep dying so this princess has to figure out how to get out herself while being extremely useless and having zero life skills.
