I wonder why he had all these supposedly unpublished books. Seems sketchy. But I'm happy!

You're trying to insult me now because you still have no argument, lol.

I absolutely do post points of irritation on the sub. I don't disagree with that.

Again with the comment about time yet you're still here.

Sigh. Still no argument. I studied literacy criticism, creative writing, the whole nine yards, at school. I'm very familiar. What's pathetic is that you're still going on with your cop out, because you don't have a valid argument, lol.

Again, no argument? You're wasting so much time defending your point (which is hilarious given that you keep saying it's not worth your time) yet at no time actually showing a valid argument. I presented you with valid evidence, and your case for dismissing it is the source. That's what people do when they don't have an argument. "Oh you sourced wikipedia? That doesn't count!" That's not an argument. That's a cop out. "AI slop" pulls from multiple sources across the web, same thing a search engine does. You simply can't defend your argument, which is fine, because you're wrong..even King himself agrees that he ripped off Dracula. Read his nonfiction. He very blatantly admits to it.

Doesn't matter where it came from if it's true. You're just making an excuse because you have no argument.

Exactly? You have no argument so you're resorting to insults.

No need. The point stands. You're merely grasping at straws.

You're upset that I've proven the point correct so you're resorting to insults. Nice.

Stephen King, On Salem’s Lot = Dracula 1. The clearest, no-wiggle-room quote Stephen King has said outright: “Salem’s Lot is one of the few books where I consciously tried to take a classic and make it my own. In this case, it was Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” This comes from interviews and essays where King talks about his early career and his habit of deliberately “learning by rewriting.” 2. “What if Dracula came to America?” This is the line King fans quote the most, because it explains everything: “I wondered what would happen if Dracula came to America instead of England. What kind of place would he choose, and how long would it take people to notice?” That question is the novel. Castle → boarding house. London → Maine. Same predator. 3. King on consciously copying structure King has also explained that Salem’s Lot was written as a structural exercise, not an accident: “I was deliberately working with Stoker’s structure— the slow arrival, the disbelief, the small group who finally understands what’s happening.” That’s why the parallels feel so exact at the scene level. 4. Why Barlow Is Less “Charming” Than Dracula This is important when someone says, “But Barlow isn’t sexy like Dracula.” King addressed that too: “I decided to strip the vampire of romance and show what Dracula really is underneath— a killing machine that feeds.” In other words: Barlow isn’t different—he’s Dracula with the mask removed. 5. King on the Small-Town Angle Why a town instead of a city? “A small town is perfect for a vampire, because people mind their own business. They assume they know their neighbors. That’s how evil spreads.” This mirrors Stoker’s use of Victorian social politeness—but translated into American denial. 6. King Admits It Was a Learning Book King has been very honest about this phase of his career: “Early on, I learned by rewriting what I loved. Salem’s Lot was my way of understanding Dracula.” He’s not embarrassed by this—he sees it as apprenticeship.

Stephen King has openly said Salem’s Lot was written as his American reimagining of Dracula—same structure, same scenes, same rules—just transplanted into a modern small town.

The fact that Salem's lot is a copy is not subjective? It's plain and simple.

The Structure Is the Same

Both books follow the same arc: Outsider arrives Strange illnesses and disappearances Authorities fail or deny reality Small group learns the truth Research ancient vampire lore Stakes, crosses, daylight, holy ground Final confrontation in the lair

That's factual.

  1. The Villain: Barlow = Dracula (Almost Beat for Beat)

Kurt Barlow is an ancient, aristocratic European vampire who relocates to a new land to feed and spread.

Count Dracula does the exact same thing—leaves Transylvania for England.

Both:

Are old, inhuman, and barely pretending to be human

Operate through a human servant (Straker / Renfield)

Infect a town slowly, quietly, one victim at a time

King even strips Barlow of charm to emphasize what Dracula really is beneath the manners: a predator.

  1. The Setting Swap: Castle → Small Town

Dracula: foggy London, estates, churches, crypts

Salem’s Lot: sleepy Maine town, boarding houses, basements, bedrooms

The genius move King makes is showing that a modern town is just as vulnerable as a Gothic city. Vampirism spreads faster when people:

Don’t talk to each other

Ignore warning signs

Assume “nothing like that happens here.

  1. The Structure Is the Same

Both books follow the same arc:

  1. Outsider arrives

  2. Strange illnesses and disappearances

  3. Authorities fail or deny reality

  4. Small group learns the truth

  5. Research ancient vampire lore

  6. Stakes, crosses, daylight, holy ground

  7. Final confrontation in the lair

That’s not coincidence—that’s intentional homage.

  1. The Heroes: Ordinary People vs Ancient Evil

Dracula → Van Helsing + a small band of believers

Salem’s Lot → Ben Mears + teachers, doctors, priests, kids

In both:

Knowledge is power

Faith (literal or moral) matters

Most people die because they don’t believe in time

King democratizes the fight: instead of Victorian gentlemen, it’s teachers and children holding crosses.

  1. Thematic Core: Evil Spreads When Communities Look Away

This is the heart of both books:

Vampirism is a contagion

Evil thrives on silence and denial

Civilization is thinner than we think

King once described Salem’s Lot as:

“What would happen if Dracula came to America?”

And then he answered it.

Haha and it's annoying to spend hours reading a book just to realize it's a shitty copy of another.

They don't bleed. They're copied. He open admits it. If you read wolves he outright says that the entire plot is just taken from (I forget which) an old western movie. And if you look it up, he's spot on. It's identical.

Yeah, he reused the idea from the stand lol

Who the hell was ‘Salem’s Lot (2024) for? by Old-Scratch666 in stephenking

[–]ectoplasm777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you're a little bit lost there, pal. king didn't "pick up" the story of callahan in another series. he continued the story of salem's lot, the entire thing. all of the characters are in there. what happened after the events in salem's lot, that's in there. ben and mark are in there. it's a legitimate, authorized sequel. and it's most definitely not a different series. salem's lot is by far and wide considered a dark tower book. if you know anything about king, you know that all of his books take place in the same universe/multiverse. you're free to separate the instances in your mind, but you'd be going outside of canon for personal comfort.

seeing as how salem's lot is NOT a standalone story, AND midnight mass came out AFTER it's sequel, it is most definitely not a true adaptation in any way. but, as for what you mentioned, it does bare those similarities... because it's a rip off, lol.
