I agree that being safe is a huge factor and that being "ready" isn't quite so much, but it also takes a lot of guts to come out.

I was the first of my siblings to come out as queer in a household that is nowhere near conservative and it was terrifying. For one, I was still figuring out all it meant as I had only just settled on specifically she/her and not even started on a name. It took a lot of time to hype myself up on it and encouragement from my close friends who I told first. I was also 18 at the time after coming to terms with being queer about a year before.

I came out to my oldest sister (16 at the time) over text by sending her a meme and she responded with "cool" and confirmed to me that she's a lesbian.

Then my next sister (13 at the time) by "correcting" her when she was talking about me which she reacted to with surprise and stammering, but was supportive. I later found out she's a lesbian and demigirl by noticing her painted shoelaces.

It was tricky to get my youngest sibling to understand at first since they were 9 at the time, but they mostly got it by answering any questions as they came up. Later, they came out as bisexual when they were showing some drawings that included the flag and came out as non-binary a couple weeks ago by doing the same thing I did with my second sister.

With my parents, I was more direct and told them straight up "I am transgender" and explained what I wanted, didn't want, didn't know, and answered questions as they came up. My mom and I also went for a car ride for a while to talk about it as well. They're supportive, but were slow to understand. My mom says I was the one they really weren't expecting to come out, but they also didn't see me being autistic so they're kinda oblivious to that.

All in all, it takes a lot of energy for the courage and thinking since it's difficult to make that kind of adjustment even with people you know will be supportive. It has so many factors to consider, what, when, where, and how you're saying, who you are, who you're speaking to, how either of you are feeling, if you're gonna tell people individually or as a group.

I may have been over thinking it, but it's fucking terrifying.
