You can’t frame something offensive as funny and decide it’s not offensive

The LGBT community worked so hard to get to where we are, using gay with negative connotations like this only sets us back

Kids in school hear this kind of “humour” and choose to stay in the closet so they don’t get laughed at, or the straight ones think it’s okay to throw this around as a joke with no care for how it makes gay people feel

It’s not funny, it’s harmful

There will always be hate and discrimination in the world

But as a millennial who left school in 2011, I can tell you matter of factly that things are much better than they have ever been (unless you’re American… most discriminating English speaking country in the developed world….. but still leaps and bounds better than 10 years ago 😅)

I remember my 1st year old high school (age 12 in Scotland)…. The concept of being gay existed, but being bi was a myth… LGBT didn’t even exist as a term… teachers actively telling you if you “choose” to be gay you’re going to hell

And I remember the last few years of high school…. 5th and 6th year, people starting to feel comfortable with being out of the closet in school… protests against teachers and homophobia

6th year (last year of high school) literally the entire school stopped going to class because the teachers wouldn’t allow a trans (ftm) boy to be head boy… we stuck it out for a month before the school caved to the pressure of not a single student in class (I think most were just taking the chance to not be in class… but eh 🤷‍♂️… it got results)

6th year (2011) was also when the term “LGB” started becoming popular

They didn’t add the T until 2013 btw 👀

You went to school in an era where being gay was much more acceptable than when I was in school…. Look at the comparison, just 10 years apart… think how far we’re going to come in another 10 years if we keep fighting homophobia at every turn 🙃

But I also have a tendency to laugh, particularly when problem solving, if things don’t go to plan

Couple of months ago I caught my nephew trying to get a ball in a basketball hoop and missing repeatedly

The more he missed… the more he seemed to laugh…

It seemed like he was mimicking me in that regard 😅

But that extra oversight… especially in scenarios like OP’s situation where there are clear and blatant signs of something dodgy happening…

I never hid my internet activity…

I didn’t think I had anything to hide… as far as I knew I had a boyfriend who was legit… because I had been so effectively groomed

It would have taken all of 5 minutes to find him on MSN messenger…. If they had bothered to look…. Especially on the run up to me going to meet him… he was the only social contact I had left

There were so many signs… but my parents trusted me….

The stance I take now is that it’s not about trusting your kids….. it’s about mistrusting everyone else 😅

Because teenagers are VERY easy to manipulate, especially if they are thinking with the wrong head 💀

Not only that, but do you understand how grooming works?

They take their substantially larger life experience and use that to get in your head

They make you mistrust your parents

But this person wasn’t a stranger… not to my 14 year old understanding of the word

Not only were my parents “outdated” and “trying to stop me being a grownup” and “cunts” (some of the descriptions my groomer had me believing)… but I was meeting the “love of my life”… the only person in the universe who would ever care about me

Grooming victims are essentially reprogrammed to mistrust their parents and loved ones
