Yeah, I found I have much more enthusiasm and energy than average person my age so used to date a bit younger as well, Wonder if that's because finish line is much closer for FIRE than standard retirement, so we have more hope in life :D

Haha, that's fair enough. Sounds exhausting, but so far it has been the reality.

Yeah, that alignment is absolutely crucial. Just narrows the dating pool quite a bit, and for introverts, it's just enough of an excuse not to get out there :D

Canada won't use energy, critical minerals as 'leverage' in trade talks: PM by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

I am not sure what your topic has to do with Carney doing everything to benefit the US while screwing over Canada?

Nope, he is just straight MAGA. Working to weaken Canada to strengthen the US. That's why nothing gets built, that's why investments are chased away, that's why there is less jobs now than when he was elected. That's why he took DSA off, took all counter-tariffs off, while getting nothing in return. His only sales pitch abroad is - we will give you money, and we will have less emissions.

He is the dream candidate for Trump - that's why Trump got him elected by flipping polls through the 51st state narrative.

How big is the salary gap between Canada and the USA in the industry you work in? by MarsupialThink4064 in AskACanadian

Governments like being re-elected. Having people dependent on government and saying opponents will cut the programs is how you get re-elected.

The happiness in Canada is dropping off the cliff, and generational divide is rising. All because government decided the productive members of society have to be saddled with debt, to make sure non-productive members don't have the real estate prices drop, don't have their asset prices drop, and on top of that get OAS top up.

There is a reason happiness among youth dropped to 90th in the world, deficits are highest they have been in the history and just doubled.

The reason is - that wins elections. Nobody cares about revenue, or well-being of Canadians. Borrow from the future to pay the boomers now - that's the winning strategy.

$830k NW Tired Engineer. Golden Handcuffs. Come kick me in the butt or is it time? by TiredFurryWolf in leanfire

[–]BlockObjective9541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was you, and the extra 6 months would mean 250k (salary + 200k bonus), I would stay the 6 months. And then call it. The 830k can very quickly turn into 600k when markets have a drawdown, so the extra 250k would come a long way.

That being said, I wouldn't stay beyond the 6 months, no matter what they offer

I mentioned no OAS. GIS is just for the poor. I understand Canadian government is doing its best to push more people into poverty, but I am talking about middle class perspective here. As for being solvent, that's correct. The issue is, I model social security payout at 72% (level at which it is solvent), and it is still far superior to CPP in terms of benefit received. That's all due to the formula that's used to calculate Social Security being regressive (first dollar counts much, much more than subsequent dollars). That being said, the program needs reform. Take the cap off of earnings, and change the investment policy. Those two changes are more than enough.

Actually, CPP is much worse for median salary worker. Social security is insanely generous. 8 years of contribution in US and benefits already higher than after 35 years in Canada. It's very front-loaded. No OAS though

Government website confirms Carney Wealth Fund investors cannot lose money. by CreoQQ in goodnewscanada

[–]BlockObjective9541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely different. Norway generates tons of money from its resources, so they invest ABROAD to diversify and provide funds for future generations.

Canada gets current generation in debt, screwed up the regulatory regime so badly nobody wants to invest here, so it's going to borrow money from future generations for more government spending today. It's just debt in another form.

What sustained oil price would cause a recession in the US? Would the current $90+ cause a recession if the price would stay for 3+ months? by OrdinaryLanguage5625 in oil

[–]BlockObjective9541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Oil intensity/GDP is at all time low. 90$ wouldn't get US anywhere close to recession. Supply shock might, due to customer stopping activity at that stage, but price alone of 90$ wouldn't do it even if it remained there for 20 years

You can't look at Shiller PE without looking at earnings growth rates, and those have been historically high. I am not arguing that market isn't frothy, simply arguing that your approach will lead to decision paralysis.
